Does anyone know of a way to take digital music and alter it so the
tempos are changed?

Yes. But it takes some expensive software. Ask Matt if he has
Protools.

Protools??  For shame!

The drummer doesn't have that, but now that you mention it, I do know
a guy who knows a guy...  will check with him.  Thanks.  :-)

If you only want one piece altered and know exactly what you want,
send it here and Matt can do it.

Thanks, John, but what I want to do is a bit more involved than just
changing one piece.

btw, no offence to your matt and his protools rig - I know matthew
would also love to have one!

None taken. I think most modern musicians are partial to Protools.
Matt just got his set up and he's having trouble leaving it alone.

Matthew got a set of Roland V-Drums just before christmas and is
having a similar problem.

Roland is bad news for a musician's social life. My bro got one of the
first Roland guitar emulator/synth thingies that came into Canada some
years ago. He disappeared into his basement with it and didn't surface
for months.

Certain chemicals, if injested, have been reported to do that...

I need specifics!  :-)  And in general, I want to speed it up - I
already know a bit about how to slooooow it down.  I am going to see
Roger Waters this summer, and so will learn even more about that then.

Legally, I suspect that massive doses of caffeine would result...
Illegally, I have no firsthand knowledge of the required chemical
combinations necessary for the endeavor... My preferred chemical is
alcohol... It tends to slow things down a bit... Well, except the
frequency of urinal visits, I guess...

Seriously though, I believe that CoolEdit would work...

I would assume it is quite possible.  A few years ago I got some
software that came with my laptop that allowed me to play DVDs with a
lot of options.  One that I fooled around with briefly changed the
playing speed of the DVD to fit a time selected by the user.  If 200
min was selected, the DVD might be slowed down to fit that time.  If a
mere 50 min was selected, the DVD would be played at a fast enough
speed to play the complete thing in that time.  I'm sure digitally
recorded music can have its "beats per minute" varied rather easily. I
haven't the foggiest if there is software available to do that,
however.

On another note, I noticed that, say, a 5% increase in speed was
virtually undetectable.  Maybe a sharper person than I (not hard to
find) might have picked it up, but I doubt it.  Anyway, a 5% increase
in time may not seem like much, but so many TV shows are pre-recorded
and if they played an hour long show a little fast, think of the
additional ads they could sell.  Are they doing this already?

I remember reading something awhile back that said that some stations
/ networks are doing this already... For a movie, there will usually
be a notice towards the beginning something on the order of, "edited
for content and to run in the allotted time"... It's not necessarily a
wholesale speeding up of the movie though... It might consist of
removing portions where the image doesn't change much, or the delay
between scenes... They have to ensure that they don't screw up the
soundtrack too much in the process...
