We have a group of 5 older Boy Scouts taking the course.
Just a clarification on the PADI training multimedia CDrom...

Can it be used to install the software on multiple computers,
and then just put on the shelf as a backup ?
OR is it like protected PC video game software,
and physically needs to be loaded into the PC while the training is used ?

ie - can the software just be installed once, and the CDrom forgotten,
or does it need to be physically passed around & shared for each learning
session ?

tnx -

--> multimedia for pc
--> this option allows for up to five people use the same study materials.

these are available in what is called a crew pak.
the product number for the book version is 60300.
the product number for the multimedia version is 60316.
they are available at any PADI dive shop as well as online.
P.Schuman - 17 Mar 2007 18:38 GMT
ok - I've seen this same product number - 60316 -
listed as DVD and also as CDrom -
Are there different product numbers for the DVD vs CDrom versions ?

Is this just a video, ala watching the video tape ?
If so, then what are the computer "reqs" to be able to either install or watch
it ?
disk space, CPU, memory,  windows version XX
and what "plays" the video - external mpeg player, or ??

All I can tell you is that the ones that originally cam out could be
loaded on many computers.

But that was some time ago.

All I know is the DVD version is newer than the CD version, and as for your
other question:  You are generally dealing with legal licensing (how many
computers can the disc be loaded on -- legally).  Most programs where the CD
must be inserted to run can be overcome by loading the entire CD onto your
hard drive and direct the program to that instead of the CD.

What happened when you tried to install the software on multiple
computers?

I'm trying to figure out what needs to be purchased.
My latest light bulb seems to indicate:
   text manual # 60300 + video DVD # 70831
or
CDrom # 60316 that has text and video

BUT I can't find out how to handle the logistics
of each of the 5 students studying on their own,
vs having a group session and watching the video or taking the reviews.

ie - the question about what to do with the CDrom & can the entire thing
be installed on EACH computer, or does the software "look" for the CDrom
to show the video, run the software, or whatever....

The difference between having 5 students at a central classroom with 5 ID's,
or having 5 students running the CDrom "installation" at home ?

It's the logistics issue of "what will work" - so have not purchased anything
yet....

Bearing in mind that this is diving, not computer stuff, have you
considered 5 students in a central classroom with a an actual
instructor?  Assuming that one is available of course.

What comes in the pack is the Open Water DVDs.  There are two of them;
module 1 and module 2 are on the first, mods 3, 4 and 5 on the
second.  They're not software that you load, as such, but rather
movies that cover the information in chapters 1 through 5
respectively.  I'd recommend watching them together - as noted by the
poster below, with an instructor if possible.  If you are using them
for self-study or pre-work that's fine - but everyone is likely to get
more from them if you watch them as a group, IMO.

Here's the answer from PADI tech support -
I STRONGLY suggested they add this info
to the course listings on the website.

BTW - after contacting several PADI shops,
none of them could tell me the info shared below...

Yes, you can put the entire program onto a hard drive and shelve the
discs. Everything from disc 1 is always installed; it contains the
program and a few of the videos. Disc 2, the remaining videos, the
install is optional. If you don't install it, you must have it in the
drive when you run the program. When you install it, the disc is no
longer required.

Question on the previous version of the Open Water multimedia pack...

I'm guessing that the previous version
was on CDrom format vs DVD format.
Could you, with the CDrom version,
install the entire package onto the PC,
and then shelve the CDrom,
or were the CDroms needed
to be physically used to run the video, text, etc ?

I'm just wondering, because every local PADI dive shop we asked,
said that the CDrom disc needed to be present to be used.

The reason we asked,
is that we have 5 boys that want to study on their own,
and only meet once a month for their check dives & reviews...

I'm reasonably sure that PADI expects a ratio of one CD sale per student.
While the software can be loaded onto a computer and then kept as backup, I
doubt that's what they intended.

Since it's Boy Scouts, might I suggest that software piracy probably doesn't
set a real good example?

As PADI if it's OK.  If they agree, no problem.  If they don't, do it legal.

They *require* it - atleast here in Asia.

The only exception is if it is all members of a family, all sharing
the same address.  Even then, they "strongly suggest" that each member
be sold their own manual, as people like having their own copy.

hmmm - I guess the 5 user IDs doesn't really make sense then.
Guess it should be 1 user ID for computer record keeping.
or maybe at a scuba shop classroom, it works well.

Since you've said nothing about how those 5 user IDs are to be used, I don't
know.  My best guess is that they are either for multiple instructors in a
single shop or, perhaps, for multiple students in a single shop.  Neither
entitles someone to make and distribute multiple copies.

Like I said, ask PADI if it's OK.  If they agree, no problem.  If they
don't, do it legally.
