Okay, I am a novice, and please, hopefully no wise a.s comments. :-)

Do most of you wear Speedos?  Regular trunks?  Jocks?  Do you go natural?
Seriously, this is a bit like the old kilt question.  There has to be one
garment that is most practical.

Thanks.

 Swim suit.

Even the looser type?  Just tuck them in?

I've never noticed a problem with regular trunks getting all wadded up.
But then I haven't bought new trunks in years, so I don't know about
the contemporary hip-hop knee length style.  I also have an ancient pair
of Speedos that work fine, though my wife is ashamed to be seen with me
in 'em.

If you have never tried on a wetsuit, boy are you in for a treat.  Being
made of rubber, you'd think the would stretch.  But no.  They only stick
like rubber.  Think "full body condom".

Yeah.  Bear in mind that it is quite normal to put your suit on right
before you get in the water and take it off right after.  So whatever
you wear to and from the dive site goes under your suit.

 I'm a pretty big guy.

A pair of knee-length swim shorts on me is tent size for little fellers.

Just in case, I carry "boxer-brief" type underwear in the gear bag, incase
I forget my suit.

It's pretty much up to how modest you want to be. Most of us get into or out
of our wetsuits on the boat.  If everyone on the boat is comfortable with
nudity, then natural is fine. If not, you should at least wear something.
The one exception is women.  Women should always go natural, naturally.  If
they're sufficiently top heavy, they should also lower the zipper an
appreciable, or appreciated amount.  Yes, I'm a male chauvanist pig, but I
know what I like.  A speedo, or similar fits better under a suit than other
options, but it doesn't have to be one of the near thong types.  Speedo
makes similar suits from a thong to something similar to boxers but tighter
fitting. If you're hung like a horse, wear something baggy.  Those of us
that aren't so well equipped, won't appreciate your good fortune.

Personally, I'm layered.  I start out with a normal Speedo.  I don't stand
around in it long.  I'm not longer in the kind of shape that a Speedo
requires.  I wear a lycra skin over the Speedos on pretty muchall dives both
to avoid stinging things in the water column and to protect me from the sun
while on the surface.  Thanks to my blond hair, blue eyes and light
complesion (my butt only, the rest of me is usually tanned), the sun and I
are not good friends.  The sun and my dermatologist, on the other hand, get
along great.  When the water is cold enough, which is is right now, I wear a
wet suit over the skin.  The skin makes it a bit easier to get into the
wetsuit.

I wear a Speedo, which looks really gross on my aged, desiccated body.

But it doesn't get all wadded up around my privates.

It's the old tradeoff between looks and comfort. And I don't dive for looks.

Trust me.  The last thing you want to see me in is a pair of Speedos.  Even
I don't want to see myself in Speedos.

I bought the longer speedos that look like bike shorts.  They are the
same thickness as a speedo, so they don't bunch up, but still go down
about half way down my thighs.  I just wear another swimsuit over them
until I'm ready to put my wetsuit on.

It's still not pretty, but no nearly as bad as seeing me in a
traditional speedo.

Speedo makes a tank suit that is a tad more modest than the usual
"marble sack" racing suit.  It even has a little pocket for your car
keys, when shore diving.  Not quite the "Eeeew" factor of presenting
my 64-year phys in a racing speedo.

You have to search the Speedo website hard to find it, but it is
there.

As the daughter of my best friends says about him wearing spandex biking
shorts:

"Spandex is not a right. It is a privilege." (Also applies to classic
speedos.)
