Richard Williamson - 04 Feb 2007 19:42 GMT I am a relative newcomer to diving, and very enthusiastic about the sport. When I subscribed to this newsgroup, I was under the impression that most of the traffic would be about diving. Whilst there have been some very interesting threads, it turns out that most of the traffic is not just off-topic, but childish name-calling. Even the interesting threads get hijacked by people just intent on name-calling.
Those intent on stupid postings are really not doing the sport of diving many favours. I'm off to find myself a scuba website with an active forum which is more likely to be interesting.

I checked into Scubaboard yesterday, this time going so far as to actually register. It's all the same old crap and I got bored real quick after playing with my profile settings for a bit. That's the one thing you can't do here is play with your profile settings, though now that I post from Google I suppose I really could do that here now too. Perhaps a newbie like you might be interested by the SOS, but there's nothing I learned in a day over there that I didn't already know from a mere 8 years over here.
To me, the so-called "stupid postings" are more informative than anything on Scubaboard. How can you learn useful Chuukese profanities on a moderated board? This time, when the Odyssey's deckhands keep trying to kill me by putting nitrox into my tank for a deep air dive, I'll have something better to yell at them than "I said air, deck heads!" (A "deck head" as everyone knows, is the smelly head located on the dive deck that somehow gets overused and undercleaned during the course of the trip; not very nice, to be sure, but a creative Chuukese insult would be far better)
Scotty Boy - 05 Feb 2007 08:04 GMT Why accusing someone from Chuuk when someone from other island calling you name. islander from Chuuk, but the rest are not. so why ya dont' talk to us. we are not from chuuk, but a friends of Chuukese.
Scotty Boy - 05 Feb 2007 08:07 GMT yeah, the rest of the islanders on here are not Chuukese, they are Guaminian, Kosrae, and Yap.
so yeah, f.ck you talk to us, we are friend of islander the guy you started with, sucking his cock.

That said, you are really going to be missing something if you don't check in now and then.
Part of the problem here is that there are regulars and we've been talking to each other for years. That being the case, we are about talked out with regard to scuba, when it comes to speaking to one an another. However, newcomers are always welcome especially when they want to ask questions about scuba. Many questions have already been covered extensively and can be found by searching in Google.
But if you have any questions you'd like answered, you'll find a wealth of knowledge here that may be hard to find at a more "active forum". It has been my experience that the more "active forums", while moderated, are also filled with newer divers. I'm making an assumption that you are interested in finding out the most info and from the most experienced and prolific divers. Those can be found here.
Go ahead, ask us a question. I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised (in between some of the posters name calling). :^)
Best regards,
chilly

With regards to the childish name-calling, that's just some WebTV kids being ... well ... uhhh ... WebTVers... Killfile the entire domain like most of the rest of us do and you won't even know they're there...
On the other hand, if you want to talk about diving, feel free to start up a topic... If we like it or think that it might eventually morph into a guns, politics, or sex topic, we'll join in... <evil-grin>

And don't let the internet slam you on the a.s on the way out.
I've been here going on ten years and 1100 dives.
I learned virtually everything I know about the sport here, so many things they couldn't be listed, and a few choice items that saved my life once or twice.
I met several lifelong friends here, among the nearly 100 group members that I've met in person, and the 11 different states I've been diving in with them.
We get together and dive more than any group I'm aware of.
This group and these people, useless to you, have been an invaluable tool to me.
But here's where a buttsurfing rube like you belongs: www.scubaboard.com
Trust me, you'll fit -right- in.
With the rest of the sheep.

ben bradlee - 05 Feb 2007 01:08 GMT Everything I virtually learned, so many things they couldn't be listed on this virtual listing - much less counted, even in tens - and a few choice items that saved my life once or twice - I know about the sport from here, here, here. Here here rec.scuba!
I met several of my million friends here, among the nearly 100 group members from 11 different states, Texas, and some of those other foreign countries I've met in person and I've been diving in hell with them. they're the best and the brightest, sweetest, most caring guys in the entire universe ('cept for maybe one or two disagreeable a.sholes - you know the ones I need to get after in my posts every once in a while.) I'm damn sure and damn straight in love with these guys!
We get together and dive more than any group I'm aware of. Why, I dove with a guy a few years back and he's still on the same dive. See if you can top that in a group of normal people. And that's just to name one of the hundreds of minutes I've lived in the past lifetime. You spend time here and you can think like this too - it's called "high-level" thought. I'm sure you could catch on if you tried (and wern't so damn dumb.)
This group and these people, useless to you and so many others, have been my life. I treasure rec. scuba and each and every post that graces the screen of my computer. Here's where you belong, right here, on rec.scuba. Trust me, you'll fit -right- in. I belong here, I am here and anybody that says different don't know sh.t from beans about sh.t or beans. That's no beans either. I make no sh.t about it!
You say good-by, I say hello. Hello, hello, I don't know why you say good-by I say hello-o! Now apologize to the group and have fun.

Stick around and contribute, ask, and see what you get in return. Some of the best divers in the world are occasional visitors here and quite a few of the regulars have been diving longer than many have been alive.
Otherwise, don't let the door hit you in the a.s on your way out.

Like this other poster, everything I've asked has resulted in being insulted, flamed, accusted of trolling, and general disrespect. This place might be friendly to some 10+ year regulars, but is exceptionally hostile to everyone else. Frankly, I don't blame others for leaving and never returning. Its not a friendly place to be. Yes, might be quite educational, but its hard to respect answers and advice when the majority of it is insults for the sake of being insulting, and expected to tolerate it because the ones dishing the insults are "regulars" and "full of experience and knowledge". Why whould anyone respect people that show no respect whatsoever?
Thanks, Shawn

From: islande...@webtv.net (Atin washin) Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2007 22:41:06 -0800 Local: Mon, Jan 8 2007 1:41 am Subject: Truck Lagoon ( micronesia)

The first *response* to that Spam was from Greg, and it was a joke, playing on a misspelling in the original SPAM. Specifically, it was:
GM> Truck lagoon? Is that one of those quarries where GM> they've sunk a few pickups and a semi?
This was followed by a follow-up joke on the joke:
FW>I thought it was where the characters from "Cars" went to die.....
A reasonable conversation followed, although it became evident that there were things being lost in translation. For example,
<http://www.whywework.com/travel/micronesia/index.htm>
Is ...hello!... NOT Greg's personal website. If you don't want to believe me, go to the site's "About" page and figure out why its talking about Jennifer and Andy instead of someone named Greg.

You can try to gain some resepct by admitting that you were wrong and give Greg an apology...
...or...
You can try to deny that you're wrong (a futile gesture), which means that you're not only stubborn, but also stupid.
The choice is yours to make, and yours alone.

BTW, please do be aware that we get hit with a lot of SPAM and other attempts at explotation. As such, it has often become a "shoot first, ask questions later" reaction. Also, be aware that culturally, "Spam" in this context is not the tasty food product, but Slang for a very bad thing. The use of the term is derived from the Monty Python skit and probably has a Wikipedia page you can look up.

Now you know that every culture has its own values and customs.
For example, on Guam, when someone finds a brown tree snake, they kill it. I don't need to tell you why because you already know. They do this without caring what the brown tree snake thinks of this.
On <rec.scuba>, Spammers and Trolls are the local *cultural* equivalent to a brown tree snake. So what do you think we do? And no, we don't care what the Spammer/Troll thinks.
And just as another "culturally sensitive" reminder, I'm NOT talking about this kind of Spam:

Less traffic than L.A., that's for sure, but that's because of all the potholes. It took 3 hours to drive a circle around an island that's like 5 miles across. I can make it around town in L.A. in half the time. Less air pollution too, but the ground pollution more than makes up for it. And obviously we have better schools in L.A.

The high school, a converted Japanese administration building, still has the damaged roof from the bombing, patched over to keep the rain out of what is now the high school gymnasium. The school's outhouse doesn't even have a toilet seat - it's just an Asian-style hole in the ground, which is pretty humiliating for non-Asians. No wonder Chuukie is so messed up.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm certain I heard my name. :-)
I'm just waiting for some folks to come back from their night dive so we can go for dinner... the diving is wonderful, I am having a fabulous time, the first part of our group has departed and the second part just arrived, and so far, all reports are good. One thing that is different is that while Cozumel is normally filled with eagle rays at this time of year, I have yet to see one. The barracuda are larger and more plentiful, as are the green morays, and there are a ton of juvenile fish in places you don't normally see them.
As I sit here by myself with a few minutes, rec.scuba harkened, and I, like the crack whore to the pipe, had to stop in.
As they say in the french part of Canada, plus ca change, plus ca la meme chose.
Whoo hoo!

Two guys got on your case, just a bit.
They also gave you a significant amount of information.
To answer your other question, what made you look like a troll was asking the question you did, and crying poor about a $150 purchase after a $4000 one.
It was odd, and, we get a lot of trolls.
You received -excellent- advice from several posters, and, arguably, followed mine, the third poster in the thread, whom you didn't acknowledge.
Several other posters came to your defense.
Ben bradlee said something airily stupid, but roughly applicable in a Zen diving kind of way.

Manager: I'm sorry sir. Its his first day. I don't know what medication he is on, or should be on. The movie is on us.
Scout: Don't let it happen again, or next time we will go to Mcgnomes for lunch. Now where do you keep your screwdrivers?
Manager: SSSSScrewdrivers? Lunch? I'm a bit confused sir. This is a theatre.
Scout: Then, I'll have a bucket of flies and make em snappy. Skippy's flies are all dying from the smell.
Manager: Here take this ticket and go right down the street to AMC theatres. I'm sure you will find exactly what you need there, and feel free to smoke too.

mag3 - 05 Feb 2007 02:59 GMT >I am a relative newcomer to diving, and very enthusiastic about the >sport. So am I Richard. I've been doing it just over 1 1/4 years, and I've been a rec.scuban for just over 1 year. And trust me when I tell you, I've learned much more about the realities of diving (ie. how it's really done) and some of the best practical advice I can get from the people of this group, even though I haven't met a single one of them in person.
These are folks that take diving seriously, but manage to have a bit of fun with it and with each other along the way. I've learned a lot about how people really dive on a regular basis, which is often different than what you learn in training, but a lot more practical in the real world.
One of the best things I've learned from this group is how to put your training into proper perspective. Yes, training is important when you starting out. But what's more important is not the training agency or the training, but the instructor teaching. If the instructor knows what they're doing and cares enough to make sure you know what you're doing, you'll be in good hands. You'll also find out that some training agencies are different in their approach. I'll leave it to you to find out which agencies have earned a greater respect among rec.scubans but I think you'll find that some agency standards are such that the divers trained with them are much more confident and prepared for diving whereas some agencies simply want more people to pass so that they can increase their numbers and their membership, and the money they make.
As for the off topic/political posts etc., simply ignore them if you wish. I do. I tend not to participate in them because: 1) I'd prefer to keep my politics private, especially on the net (but that's just me), and 2) I don't know the group members well enough to participate so actively. I'm sure though, once I meet a few of them in person, or it's an ("off") topic that really interests me, I'll be into it with them in no time.
Take it from another newcomer. If you want practical experience from the people who've been there, done that, and know what they're doing/talking about, this is one of the best places to be. Sure it may cost your eyes/ears a bit of political noise, and other forms of banter, but that's an easy price to pay given the benefits. I intend to be here for quite a while.
Hope you are as well.

1) Skin Bends
2) Back to my possible skin bends
Now ask yourself again, whether or not you can learn something here. And that's just one example.
As you may have noted by now, a few of the others have said that they learned how to dive here (or words to that effect). I will count myself in their number. Many, many of my good diving practices I've learned here. Other divers I meet, comment on them. I learned them here!! I also learned to be very self-reliant.
I bought my latest BC based on recommendations from a superior diver here, as well as, diving with the buddy of a denizen.
We've cyber-shared one another's joy and sorrow. We've seen our numbers through serious illness, death, fights, laughter and much happiness. We've seen friends start in the sport and come to excel. If you don't want to be a part of that, there's nothing left except to say "Good day to you, sir!"
Or as Doug would put it "Don't let the 'net hit you in the a.s on the way out."
