LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. -- A Florida man is fighting for his life after a
stingray jumped onto his boat and stabbed him in the chest.

A professor of marine biology at the University of Miami said such attacks
are so "extraordinarily rare" that she's never heard of one like it.

The victim is an 81-year-old man who was boating with his adult
granddaughter and one of her friends. The women were able to steer the boat
back to land and call for help.

Rescuers said surgeons were able to remove some of the foot-long barb but
not all of it. Open-heart surgery may be necessary.

The roughly five-foot wide, 30-pound stingray died on the boat.

While such incidents are said to be rare, TV's "Crocodile Hunter" Steve
Irwin was fatally stabbed by a stingray while swimming with them in
Australia last month.

The sharks are probably welcoming the new villain. Takes some heat off
them. Should we start a pool on when the first movie about killer
stingrays is released?

I'd like to put $20 on the new movie "Singrays on a Plane" or "Stingrays on

we are going to need Kevlar bcds

As I believe I mentioned on the last topic about this sort of incident,
Kevlar isn't that great against long pointy thing type attacks... An
aluminum breastplate would be effective, but you would also need side
pieces, just in case the strike came under your arms...

Could be a whole new product line for Scott Koplin - Stingray
breastplates that could be threaded onto the standard one piece
harness, kind of like an aluminum sandwich.

The guy wasn't even in the water.

Between flying rays, leaping carp and crawling snakeheads, it ain't
even safe to go NEAR the water. <G>

There's always great lakes diving - worst thing we get here is a muskie of
fresh water eel. Lots of well preserved wrecks though.

Then again, last week a lady was run over by a car, and she wasn't even
driving! And the sidewalk is a lot less elevated above the street than an
average boat above the water...

I see a new product coming.  Stainless steel breastplates for nervous
snorklers.  Have to make those silly vests just a little bigger.

My sporasub freedive wetsuit has a thick and large chest pad for chest
cocking spearguns. It is tough, and could easily be changed to a kevlar
version, if you wanted to have even more protection.
Scott could create a whole new fad in freediving wetsuits :-)

I have gotten close to many sting rays over the years, and always saw
them getting uneasy or annoyed well before it was too late to get out
of the way..I have seen a few rearward charges by them , but again, if
you are watching and not almost touching them, it would not be a
problem..The Crockadile guy must not have been looking at the ray, and
swum too close. As far as jumping into the boat goes, where was his
shotgun ???? :-)

Kevlar still won't save you from an ice pick.

A few years ago (okay, more like 15,I was still in Carrollton at the
time) a body armor salesdroid went to a city council meeting somewhere
to pedal his wares.  He put on the armor and handed one of the
councilmen a knife.

The councilman later resigned and went into seclusion, he was that
upset over killing the guy.

How you doing Chilly?

As I recall, you toss barbs around alot like the sting rays..so I'll
just agree with anything you are saying :-)

Nice to hear from you again.

You must have been one of the "literate potheads" in college.  :-)

All I ever did was run around in the steam tunnels with a wooden sword
as some dice.  Lots of dice, actually.  4s, 6s, 10s and 20s.

No probability dice?  Also, I always found that 8s were pretty important too.

C'mon... throwing that 100 sided dice that looked like a ball was super fun.  I did manage to build
up a level 33 wizard.  Imagine the destruction you could achieve with 12 x (2d8) magic missiles.

Damn, I was a nerd.

Although, you didn't really have to have any dice to read "The Hobbit" or the "Lord of the Rings"
trilogy.

Oh, and all of that happened in junior high for me.  Who wanted to wait until college?  Besides,
college is more about drinking and chicks than it is about D&D and fantasy books.

There's nothing quite like planning D&D in full scale in the steam
tunnels under campus.  Especially after blowing a couple of joints.

put a hole in the boat

The way I last heard it, the eagle ray was jumping out of the water and
accidentally jumped into the boat.  The old guy got hit because he was
trying to repatriate the ray.

I would have been willing to bet he was either trying to return it to the
water or trying to kill it.  You'd almost have to be bent over the ray to
get hit in the chest.

Hmm... This is beginning to sound like the beginning of
Frank Schaetzing's novel "The Swarm", were nature seems to
rise against man.

So Steve's stingray got to shout to one of his friends about what happened
and how. The friend put it in "The Stingray Gazette" and now all of these
beasts finally know how to chase these damned humans out of the ocean.  And
of course there is also the "right winged fanatic" under the stingrays that
goes arround forming suicide commando's who jump on boats to kill innocent
old people. Must have been an afghan ray then.

Jeez in what a world are we living! Luckily plankton are illiterate; just
think what would happen if they found out they itch when they get in our
underwear!
