I'm heading down to the Carribean for vacation in a few months.  I am
PADI certified but a novice.  I do not have my own eqiupment other than
mask, snorkel and fins.  The last trip we used the BCD and reg supplied
by the resort with no problems.

A friend has offerred his Sea Elite regulator as a loaner for the trip.
Is it worth packing this for our two to three dives while down there?
My knowledge of the relative quality of the different brands available
is minimal.

Thanks,
Mike

If it were me, the question I would be asking myself is whether or not I
want to replace my friends reg if it gets kyped or lost by the airline
bumblers.

True enough with anything of value we travel with.  So are you saying
that most scuba enthusiasts do not fly with their regulators?

Most scuba enthusiasts fly with their regs as carry on. That can be
interesting Too, My older poseiden first stage (2960) is barrel shaped -
seems it looked like a grenade on the scanner ;-)

I got sick of having them rifle through my carefully packed carry-on, so I
leave the regs in a separate bag inside the carry-on that I yank out before
X-raying so they can concentrate on that and let the rest of my stuff go
through.  Still, I only get a hit on the regs maybe once out of every ten
X-rayings, and sometimes telling the X-rayer that it's scuba gear while he's
scratching his head and looking at the screen can eliminate the bag check.

My experience with the reg in the carryon happened on Sept 29, 2001.
I was 'Almost' funny watching the reaction. I had an even worse time
coming back. My company was to <insert expletive here> to buy a round
trip ticket, so I was flying one ways with some strange baggage - a
traveling photo studio with props. On top of that the saleperson that
saw me off at the airport was from columbia, You just can't look to much
more arab and be from the americas!!!

after they Xrayed my camera carryons a dozen times, they finaly hand
searched them. The checked bag with the typewriter, washbasin, old boots,
and my drysuit gave em fits!

When I flew to Orlando with my gear, I had my reg in my carry on. They
had to pull my bag and do a manual check.  The chick with TSA said
that I should pull it out and put it in its own bin while going
through security in the future.  I did that on my flight home and
never had a problem.

My problem happened about 20 days After 9-11. there just wasn't that
much 'adjustments' made from before, but fears were high. there was No
TSA then :-)
I wounder if we should call them 'brown shirts"?

Not at all.

What I am saying is that I never borrow anything I am not willing to
replace.

If the rental gear you experienced sufficed, save your friendship and rent
when you get there.
