Do I get the tunes off my iPod back on to my hard drive?

Should I just spend the $20 for a program?

Do you have the freeware available online?

SLow down, read the help and documentation and you will see what they are
doing.

The ipod was designed to prevent this.  Some crap about preventing
piracy, or something like that.  Luckily, there are about a million free
programs designed to get around these little problems, here's a few:

http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
http://www.softaward.com/8320.html
http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/software/1981/index.html
http://www.mymusictools.com/download/ipod-backup/

I've used a variety of these (I just download one when I need it), and
they've all been pretty good.

Aint gonna happen. you load your tunes into itunes and you plug in the
ipod tunes are loaded up. You delete a song from the itunes library
and next time you plug in the ipod, it is gone.  Apple wear, they are

Smarter than those that purchase Apple products, perhaps.  Personally, I
have no problem at all loading my mpg files to or from my Windows based PDA,
between computers, or on and off any of the players I have that support the
mp3 format.

Never underestimate the cluelessness of some electronics designers... I had
a problem with a cell phone battery a couple of years ago... It died, but
the damn phone could not operate without a working battery in it even if it
was plugged into a car or wall outlet... These are also the designers who
have seen fit to allow the phone to be able to use more power while in talk
mode than can be replenished by the car charger, thus creating a maximum
talk time on the phone even when it is plugged in... Yeah, it takes quite
awhile to run down a battery this way, but if you have unlimited
mobile-to-mobile minutes, two cars that are being driven across country, and
you're using the phones with headsets to chat between drivers, it definitely
can happen...

Google it, there is a company out there that is selling IPOD battery
replacement kits, or for a few dollars more you can send them the IPOD
and they will install the battery and send it back

Have they fixed that with the new ones?  I was told that to get it
replaced costs $100-150 + $50 to open it, and x$ for shipping to/from
Apple.  Someone has to be coming along with a way to bypass Apple and
DIY.

I've had mine for a couple of years, and I always run it to complete
discharge.  So far, no problem with keeping the charge.

There are a few companies offering battery replacements or DIY kits.
Mine seems to be still running strong, but a few people here at work
have either sent theirs off for repair, or gone the DIY route.

Few examples:

http://www.darcynorman.net/2005/11/18/ipod-battery-replacement
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10165_7-5643378-1.html

Last one's pretty good, has a video of the process.  Seems pretty simple...

I have to confess that there were times when I attacked Bob as an
individual.  At least I tried to stick to the concepts rather than the
person.  Regardless of what I did or did not do, what's going on right now

Chester & Spike?

Rednecks and trailer trash?

He starts this sh.t, every time, and he is going to get pounded for it,
every time. And when he does, he goes to the backchannel e-mails and gets
Mighty Mouth involved, who does nothing but attack character and person,
sometimes manages to get GM in on it, and then snivels about how mean we

Nobody asked you to apologize.  What I asked was for you to stop.  Like I
told Scott, address the issues all you like, you'll find me right there with
you.  It's the personal attacks that are out of line.

>  How did you want to be regarded?

Go back and look at my history.  Look at how many times I attacked the
individual rather than the concepts.  Then look at what you're doing right
now and tell me you believe it's the same.

Since you asked, however, I'll be glad to answer.  I did not want to be
regarded as someone who attacks the individual and I made a conscious effort
to keep from doing just that.  I wasn't always successful, but at least I
tried.

Now what does what I did or did not do have to do with what you should or

In fact I'm being much nicer to John than I have to others in the past,

 I never do.

According to what he writes, yes.

Strictly.

You'll have to ask him how accurate his statements actually are.

I ask him all the time to cite any of the lies he accuses me of.

 He hasn't had any luck.

Since you just clearly, publicly, accused me of lying, perhaps you can do
the same.

 You're welcome to your opinion.

Especially when the issue is John's character, i.e., his -intentional
inaccuracies, exaggerations, and outright lies.

Calling him a coward, when he states he'd rather have his family shot that
shoot back at his attacker is an on-topic observation.

Well, it's nice to know you find name-calling and personal attacks so
abhorrent.

Amazingly enough, this "twofer" is -another- personal attack on Bob Ling
as well.

It seems if you go on the internet, make a bunch of character attacking
scurrilous accusations and lies,

That pretty much sound -just- like innuendo, but somehow, aren't,

Sort of "going to extremes to trivialize and diminish the character and
standards of anyone who doesn't toe your line (or kiss your a.s), using
ridiculous and unfounded hyperbole and even prevarication to disparage the
character of those with whom one disagree." (-JOF)

And then spinelessly refuse to even -attempt- to back up a single thing
you've said, after offering to wager a fake bet,

That somehow makes the person all this is aimed at...

 A bully.

out Ottawa police canine and bomb-disposal units. A member of the crew found

Try a program called Rhapsody. It works great. I'm pretty sure it's a
free download. it came with Wendy's mp3 player.

Rhapsody rox as far as a music service goes.   $15 a month gets you all
the music you want.  You have to pay if you want to move it to a mobile
device, though.

Maybe.

When the iPod is docked to your computer, you should be able to see the
iPod as a hard disk (you can with a Mac, I'm not sure about Windows).
You can then copy the contents of the iPod hard disk to your computer
HD.

Sorry. My mistake. Matt called me to say that iTunes doesn't allow it.
You can use your ipod to port music if you zip it but as music it can't

Because you try to turn every thread I join into your personal pissing

I was trying to help out with the iPod. My son knows a bunch about

I'd check with Matt when he got home, and even tossed in a little play

You'll have to take a vote on that one.

You're the one that started it with the completely unnecessary golf club
comment.

You were wrong about the iPod to begin with, and I skipped commenting on
it out of courtesy, since you were trying to help.

Then, after not getting a response from your -first- trolling golf club
reference, you made a second, and I responded.

Then you deluded as to how -I- made this part of "my personal pissing

Just further confirmation that Canadians can do no wrong, and
it's -always- the Americans' fault.

John, I'll explain this again, as I have in the past.

I don't -owe- you any benefit of the doubt.

You lie about me, get caught cold, refuse to apologize.

You completely invent things that you say I've said and done.

You've specifically questioned my honor and courage continually.

audacity to tell me that -I'm- obsessed with.

Anyone know any for mine? (never ever came to mind before to ask this in a

Personally, my solution for all of these issues is to avoid them in the
first place.  I have half a dozen portable devices for playing MP3 files.
Most of them use a SD card.  A 1 gig SD card holds a lot of music which can
be moved back and forth the same way you move any other file from one medium
to another.  The smallest one is about two inches, by one inch, by a half
inch, includes an FM radio and cost me considerably less than a comparable
IPOD.

Me too.

I even got a Car stereo that accepts SD cards and USB memory sticks for my wife's car

Wait, why didn't I get all that cool crap for myself?

I'm not that attached to my music.  In the car, the radio usually satisfies
my need for background sound.  I did, however, get one of those phono plug
to cassette devices that does a nice job of playing anything I want through
my car stereo.  My PDA is a Garmin M5.  It's a mapping GPS as well as a PDA,
MP3 player and, thanks to a nifty program called DVD to Pocket PC, a usable
movie player even if the screen is a bit small for the purpose.  About the
only time I hook it up to the car stereo is when I'm on long trips.

All agreed, but I just happened to own the Sony MD-walkman, especially as
back then, it was the only device small enough to hide under clothing and
still record a lot of quality audio (5hrs) without even any clicks at the
end of a tape or so.

No, not for ripping music from concerts (wich must be pretty poor quality
actually) but to record interviews with suspects without clearly having any
recording devices.

The trick was to move the audio to PC by USB-cable instead of phone-out-jack
to mic-in-jack. The latter loses a lot of quality, wich is pretty important
in court!

You're using the wrong sound card if you're losing that much quality.  Trust me, I know.  I'm the
"IT guy" at a PD.  I've got some computers that I can transfer by audio cable and some that I can't.
A quick test will tell me which one a specific computer is.

I will admit that there is some loss anytime you transfer this way, but many sound cards lose so
little that most people wouldn't be able to tell which was the original and which was a reproduction
without specialized equipment (or *especially* sensitive ears).

Well worth a try with prices for soundcards as low as they are today. Then
again, would have bet my Creative LAbs Soundblaster pro something should be
in the upper legue.

Soundblaster pro is Creative's "value" line.  I would read that as "cheap".

It's funny actually.  I almost exclusively use onboard audio in the computers I build.  Some of them
are really good and others not so much.  The really interesting thing is that the same audio chipset
can be wonderful on one board and not worth having on another.  I guess it's the implementation.

I've heard good things about the Turtle Beach (Turtle Bay?) sound cards, but I've never actually
used one.  They're a bit pricier than the Soundblasters, but the reviews are pretty good.  All of
them that have any meaningful number of reviews on NewEgg get 4 of 5 eggs.  That's not too bad.

If you want a decent Creative card, you'll have to shell out around $75.  Based on reviews, I'd say
this might be a good option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102004
