Lake Michigan.

drove north from Lafayette IN for 1 1/2 hours left the house around 530, not
real sure where the marina is.... arrived at N'Pursuits dive boat at about
7:30. boat was supposed to leave at 8:00. no sign of anyone. made a call to
Captain Mike, apparently I crossed a time zone about 7 miles back., it was
only 6:30 in Gary, IN . luckily there was a riverboat casino 100 yards away
with an all you can eat buffet... a  huge plate of eggs, bacon, ham, &
sausage followed by a 3 egg omelets sandwich with Texas toast  settled my
hangover a bit. I dropped a couple $5 in the slots & then it was almost time
to board. the weather was about 70 & clear. a good breeze  & choppy waters
made the ride out a bit rough. I was remembering every beer & Yeager shot
from the night before with every crash of the boat coming down off each
swell. After a rough 40 minute ride, we arrived at the site of an old steam
barge about 55 feet down the water was 74 degrees at the surface & 68 at the
bottom. I only brought me 7 mm farmer john & had expected a bit cooler
weather. I sported the hood & gloves & peeled the gloves off when I got to
the bottom. it was very sandy & not alot to see. the viz was excellent.
.around 25 feet I would guess... a few bottom feeder fish & a steel boiler
were about all there was to see. my buddy is a large man around 350 lbs & he
ran out of air after about 12-15 minutes. I still had 1100 lbs. but went on
up with him, did a 2 minute decompression stop at 15 feet, at the
recommendation of the captain.  we waited about another 20 minutes for the
other 3 divers to surface then went on to the next wreck. the David Dowe, an
old wouldn't barge about 2 miles back towards the marina. it was nothing but
a few wooden walls around 10 foot tall & 15-20 foot long. again not much sea
life.
it was good to get wet, but there really wasn't much to see. I think
throwing up in my mouth a few times might have contributed to this wonderful
experience as well. is there anything in the great lakes worth diving to?
being land locked in Indiana. I'd have to say I enjoy the quarries much more
than Lake Michigan. we did have a great view of the Chitown skyline at
least.

time to plan another Florida trip. I think I will try Key West next time..
maybe this fall

While there are many wrecks in southern Lake Michigan, they all look the
same as you described. if you want colorful fish, or abundant coral, you
aren't going to find it in Lake Michigan. Unless you just gotta get wet,
Lake Michigan isn't worth the time. I live in Valpo, and it isn't worth
the time to drive to the lake for me either.

Next time you are going to be going north, let me know. You drove right
past my motel on your way.

BTW, the time change occurs near the 215 exit on I-65.

I use several charters, but usually just go out with friends (on their
boats).

Which froggy looking fish are you referring to?

the only kind of  fish I saw. they were all over the place. tannish color a
fat roundish head with little side fins near the gills & a slender tail.
kind of  looked like a tadpole, only lighter & bigger. most were about 5-6"
long a few as big as 12" or so.
I dont have a clue what they were.

If you ever dive the Madeira, you'll see loads of them sitting all
over the wreck.

I dove the Louisville & David Dowe. the Louisville was covered with them,
the DD  barely resembles a  ship anymore

Aha! Now I know what that weird snaky thing I once saw and thought was a
mutant really was.

A Burbot!
