There is a ton on this in the google archives, but nothing on my question...

When flying with a dive computer should you take it in your checked
baggage or your carry-on (so they can scan it with their bomb
detectors).  I used to just put it in my checked bags (turned off), but
I haven't flown with SCUBA gear since the paranoia (I mean patriot) act
came into force so I'm unsure of what they're doing now.

Thanx

Either way is fine.  I check mine.

Bryan, how in the blue hell did you miss this?

Carry on. Put it in your carry on, or you risk having it taken by TSA personnel.
You may (altho recently they've been pretty good about it at airports that see a
lot of Caribbean activity) be asked to take it out and turn it on.

It makes no difference. If they find when they x-ray your checked baggage they
might want to open the bag and take a look.

I carry mine with my carry on, along with my toothbrush, bathing suit,
and anything else I am really unwilling to lose.

From an inspection standpoint, there's little or no difference.  Most of us
carry our computers, regulators and masks aboard in order to keep them safe.

Just make sure if you carry it on, not to let the security people
scan that bag with one of the handheld metal detectors.
Those hand-held metal detectors will destroy anything with
any kinds of magnetic/computer media memory, which includes
how your dive computer stores dives and it's main "program".

The XRAY machine won't hurt it though.

I find that statement odd.  Since we are talking about dive computers,
all the ones I have seen are stored in electronic memory.  The only
thing I have seen stored on magnetic media would be dive profiles moved
over to a computer hard drive or a floppy disk. In fact, my computer, a
Uwatec Air-X can download my dive profile to an interface unit and store
up to 60+ hrs of dive information.  I take it on trips instead of
lugging a laptop along.  As long as I keep the battery connected to the
interface, my dive info is safe and is unaffected by magnetic fields.

make that "normal strength" magnetic fields.

Agreed.  The airports that I have been through, I havn't seen nary an
MRI machine in them. :)

I seriously doubt the magnetic fields involved with the wands, or walk
through portals would cause any damage to a dive computer or any
non-magnetic data storage devices.

Or any magnetic media, for that matter. The biggest danger to magnetic
media in airports is the motors at the ends of the conveyor belts.

I carry it on. I don't remember ever having to show what it was or how it
worked.

You are welcome.

I carry it on - too $$$ to lose "accidently". It gets packed in my camera
case along with the dive housing and regulator. All other gear goes in the
checked luggage and could be rented cheap if lost or delayed.
They always ask me about the electronic gear - but never to turn it on
except for the digi camera. Haven't had a bad experience with security.

Do you travel with batteries in your digi cam?  I don't.

why not?
do you plan to not take pictures?

Don't want to drain the batteries during the trip.

interesting.

I just turn mine off when I am not using it.
Even if I leave it on,
it will run for several days in sleep mode.

NIMH AA cells are good for hundreds of pictures.
I carry a fast recharger.
I can recharge them faster than I can use them.

Camera is left fully functional - batteries and memory cards in place.
Haven't had a problem. They're Li-ion type and hold their charge forever. I
also have spares. I don't travel with the cam in the housing itself as I do
use it here and there during the trip ... the usual clouds, plane wings and
jet engine pics ... or of the hot stewdress when my wife is not looking! LOL
