Recommendations for gear

sytech@yahoo.com - 27 Jul 2006 21:39 GMT This is my first purchase of Scuba gear and am considering the following based on reviews I've read, price etc.. For tropical waters only.
I already have the Cressi Aqualight R BCD which is compact for travel, seems to have all the features I need and fits me perfectly.
Here are some other item's I'm considering:
SKU: SCPM2R1 Scubapro MK2 Plus/R190 Regulator, Black @149.95 SKU: GNSOSK Genesis "Sidekick" Octopus @$104.95
SKU: MRSM3DC Mares Mission 3 Compact Three Gauge Console (FT/PSI) @$134.95
or SKU: OCNV1NS Oceanic "Veo 100" Dive Computer Triple Navcon SWIV Console, Yellow @$299.95
Am especially interested in the console and wonder if I need to spend more than double for the Oceanic and if the extra features are "that" important.
Thanks in advance,
Sy

Until then:
NO you do not want a console with "features." You want a nice small brass SPG on a hose and you want a nice wrist bottom timer and depth gauge. Get a compass for your wrist if you do dives on which it would be helpful in navigation. And get lots of bungee. You will use it to bungee the above iems to your wrist, except the SPG. You will clip that to your waist on your left side. (Actually mine is on my shoulder shhhh don't tell)
You'll probably be pleased with the MK2. Get your octo to match your primary. Put the primary on a long hose and bungee the secondary under your chin.
If you must have "features", now choose whatever computer you can afford and use it to log your profiles and play with on the boat.
There, that was easy and you're all set to go diving with the best of them.

I mentioned it in passing on this page: http://grumman581.googlepages.com/scuba-certification
Now, the real thing that needs to be added is how to *select* dive gear... The act of just *buying* it is easy...

Might could be something there you could use.

Grumman-581 - 28 Jul 2006 15:26 GMT > I know it's Clockwork Orange horrifying, but follow the links at the > bottom of my page to "Popeye's Picks" and "Gear Flicks" On <http://www.finalprotectivefire.com/fredpix/>, the page loads somewhat slowly... Looking into the HTML source for the page, I see that you are loading the full image file and then having the client browser resize it instead of thumbnail files that are already resized... If you generate thumbnails and then load them instead, the page will load quicker... Clicking on the images for displaying a larger version would work the same as you are currently doing...

If you see it, it's your fixation, fuckwit.

You better tell you wife, she's eventually going to find out that your "scuba" trips aren't what you say they are.

Lee Bell - 28 Jul 2006 23:22 GMT > Will one of you geekoids PLEASE put together a standard web page that > we can cite to tell people how to buy dive gear????? Wouldn't that be nice. Then again, if it weren't for posts like this, we'd have no scuba things to write about at all.

(Actually mine is on my shoulder > shhhh don't tell) Pay no attention to Star on this one . . . well, think about what she said, but also consider the type of diving you'll be doing. Most divers do better with a computer, contents gauge and compass in a console than with a standard gauge set. If you're going to get a computer, get a nitrox capable one. It'll probably save you money in the long run. If you will stick your hands into holes in rocks, lobstering, spearfishing, etc., anything that mounts on your wrist will be a problem.
My console is clipped off like Star's contents gauge is. I like it there, but there are other options. My previous one ran across my chest and clipped to my right side chest D ring. I could read the computer no hands and it was as close and trim as what I have now. One day, I may change back.
> You'll probably be pleased with the MK2. Get your octo to match your > primary. Put the primary on a long hose and bungee the secondary under > your chin. Agreed on both points. I have a Mk 2 and a Mk 20. Both of them work well. If I were to do Scuba Pro again, I'd probably chose the Mk 25 because it can be adjusted externally. If I were buying a new regulator right now, I'd look closely at the Apex line. Last time I looked, it was considerably less expensive than the Scuba Pros and of comparable quality. YMMV. I absolutely agree that it's a good idea to match our alternate to your first stage and, if Star had thought of it, she would have said that your secondary/alternate should be of the same quality as your primary. She, and I, will be using that alternate in an emergency since both of us are set up to donate the primary.
We also agree that the alternate should be on a bungee necklace under your chin. For my money, it's one of the best ideas the technical dive community ever came up with.
I'll bet Star wishes she'd talked to you before you bought your BCD. I know I do. Too late.

Get it later and wear on your wrist.
>If you're going to get a computer, get a nitrox capable > one. It'll probably save you money in the long run. Yup. If you're gonna use a computer, you will eventually wish it was nitrox capable. Best is a model that allows you to program any mix up to 40%.

I put it on my shoulder instead of my waist because I can look down and see it at a glance without unclipping anything. If I am carrying a stage, all the SPG's liine up right there where I can see them all. Yes they are all marked so I can tell them apart.

I thought I remember saying that somewhere recently. Maybe not; thanks for pointing that out. I don't wasnt to be breathing some POC if I should have to donate my primary. I'm back in Ohio for a few days to see the boys and attend a wedding shower for the fiancee of younger son. She does not know I was able to get a flight so I hope she is pleasantly surprised :-) In any case I'm brain-dead from the redeye flight. Blech.

I don't have this issue because my gauge is on my left D ring. Even if it were on my chest ring, it would not be easy to confuse it with any of the others. The gauges on any other tanks I take are button gauges, basically a full/empty gauge when underwater and not much better when on the surface.

I'm taking a bit of time for small boating on the west coast of Florida. I expected to do a bit of lobstering, but that's not to be. The red tide is here and I'm not eating anything that comes out of this water. We're headed home tomorrow.

Lee Bell - 28 Jul 2006 23:51 GMT > Will one of you geekoids PLEASE put together a standard web page that > we can cite to tell people how to buy dive gear????? OK, I'm on the wrong coast of Florida and down a 6 pack plus a couple of Captain Morgans, so I'm in a receptive mood. I'll give this project a try. What I won't do is dictate a specific configuration. If I'm going to do this, I want a balanced presentation, discussing different options and presenting the pros and cons. I like pretty pictures.
So, here's the deal. If you guys will provide information, pictures, discussion, etc. on gear configurations for various conditions, I'll try to put together something that will be a boon to new divers without being dogmatic. No promises except I'll give it a try.
Since contributions should (I hope) include pictures, it's probably best to send them to me directly. Drop the number from the e-mail address shown for this message and you have my real one. Forget, but use a subject I'll recognize as part of this project and I'll still get the message. Forget both and your contribution will probably go to my trash like everthing else I don't recognize as valuable.

Dan Bracuk If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.
HotRod - 28 Jul 2006 14:51 GMT I've only every seen this done exstensivley with electronics but it would be nice to have a dive site where you entered a bunch of criteria and it showed you the gear that matched just that profile.
e.g. Price Range Type of diving Size Manufacterior Colours? etc. etc.
