Plaza Las Glorias is now the Moon Palace Cozumel. Chedraui is usually
our second stop when we get to the island - have to stock up on
groceries. We thought about driving one of our cars to the island and
leaving it there in our driveway - we have a house www.casaquetzal.com
- but it is a long drive from Dallas and there are some parts of Mexico
that I would not feel real safe driving thru.
Despite what the cruise directors are telling people:
1) there is no curfew on the island
2) the reefs are in pretty good shape
3) the wreck is bent but not broken
4) it is safe to get off the main street
5) the restaurants are safe

That's what I was afraid of. Matamoros comes to mind with regard to
places with unsavory characters. It's probably better to spring for
the airfare. Thanks.

I saw an article on CNN today that said the Mexican army has moved into
the state of Tabasco to quell drug gang related violence and there are
still rebels in Chiapas. To get from Brownsville to to Playa, you have
to cross one or both. Given the state of political unrest (that may
last another 6 years until the next election) I am going to be careful
about driving around in Mexico - particularly with a US license plate
on the car. Remember too that your US insurance does not (generally)
cover you in Mexico and if you are in an accident it is Napoleonic code
and they will lock you up until you pay any damages.

Yeah. Just a thought. I guess Progresso is as far into Mexico that
I'll be going.

Go ahead. Pull the other one. Progreso is on the N shore of the
Yucatan just N of Merida. Go that far you might as well go the rest of
the way.

Not that Progresso. The one 20 miles from my house on the US boarder.

Google Earth thinks of that as Nuevo Progreso

One 's' sorry.
It's confusing I think Nuevo Progreso is on the MX side. and Progreso
is on the US side. or the other way around. Everybody calls it
Progreso.
I see what your talking about though. There's a Progreso down on the
Yucatan.
Sorry for the confusion.
Anyway, my thoughts of driving through Mexico were short lived. If I
go to the Yucatan area, it will be via air.
I've got a friend in Florida that took the ferry from Tampa. He's big
into caving. His group took their own cars and gear. It was a real
expedition.

Last time I checked on it, the ferry service had been discontinued.
Had thought about that myself. Not that bad a drive from Dallas to
Tampa and Merida to Playa is all good roads and only a few hours.

And even worse, you can't bring your guns across the border to help in
the negotiations...

I've known Chuck and his wife since before he purchased his house on
Cozumel, let alone refurbished it. Chuck is 100% dependable.
The house looks good Chuck. You've updated your website since I first saw
it. Is everything back together since Wilma?

Emily knocked a garden wall down. We rebuilt it. Wilma knocked it and
another down, stripped the garden of everything, put about 20
centimeters of water inside the house. With no power the pool got very
nasty (we now have a generator). All told about 20K worth of damage
and the insurance company finally paid off about 14 of it. All back in
order. There are DVD's for sale in various places around the island
that document Wilma. One of them has footage taken during the storm.
Pretty scary.

Thanks, but no thanks. We had our own close encounter with Wilma. My loss
was not as great as yours, but only because I replaced my roof last
hurricane season.

Unless there has been a very recent name change it is the Cozumel
Palace.

Hi! Yes, springdiver, you've got three Crossings: Laredo, Reinosa y
Matamoros. The last two are the best, and you can aim to cross them
after a good night sleep at Corpus Christi, trying to make it all the
way to sleep at Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas (if you crossed by
matamoros)
Next morning, this is when you can decide, wheather you want to do the
long shot to make it to Puerto de Veracruz, or split in two and only
drive to Tampico and only to Veracruz the next day... From there you
aim to Villa Hermosa Tabasco to sleep. Next morning, Drive across the
south of the state of Campeche all the way to Chetumal, then take
north to riviera maya...
