It has come to my attention that some people's tanks here are
depriving them of some much needed oxygen when they're scuba diving,
leading to a decline in intelligence. They may be hostile towards
other posters and such stuff, so beware and please be careful.

No, we're hostile towards kwow-it-all idiots like yourself... You come
in here (without getting a feel for the group first), ask a question,
and then bitch and complain when the answer is not the answer that you
wanted... Sorry kid, but we tried to help... You wouldn't listen...

Ah so it's because I'm new here, I need to get a feel for it huh. It's
stupid how people like you behave in some newsgroups, like they own it
and new people can't say anything. Yeah I'll complain when people are
telling me you must have an instructor which is pure bullshit and then
don't understand anything else like when the person says they're not
interested and rather learn themselves. Or that someone's being rude.
You regulars can be such a.sholes protecting each others a.sholes. And
yeah if you're gonna bitch slap me it better be from your computer,
that's the only place you got the guts to do it. And then you plonk me
like a coward. I hope a swordfish nails it right up your pooper.

Not at all.  If you're going to try to honestly engage in meaningful
dialog, your decision to do so comes with the obligation on your part
to actually listen & comprehend the responses you receive and to then
adjust accordingly in your responses back.

So far, you have done a poor job in this regards, and this cannot be
blamed on anyone other than yourself.

> Yeah I'll complain when people are
> telling me you must have an instructor which is pure bullshit ...

Pure Bullshit?  Maybe.  This may or may not be a skill that is
reasonably safe to learn on your own without an Instructor:  it depends
on the qualifications of the candidate.

With you as the candidate, you are a complete unknown here, so your
current swimming qualifications are an unknown here.  If you've stated
them, then I apologize for missing them, but I'll still start off with
the most basic element:  Yes or No:  do you know how to swim?

If the answer is No, then trying to do anything by yourself in water
deeper than a bath tub is generally hazardous to your continued health.
Granted, one might not necessarily need a formal YMCA-type instructor
to learn some drown-proofing, but you do need something to bail you out
of the mistakes that everyone inevitably makes - - generally, a person
is a simpler and more reliable solution than some sort of Rube Goldberg
anti-drowning contraption, even something as perceptually
straightforward as a Mae West style BC with a CO2 inflator (of actually
good reliability).

Even if the answer is Yes, the question must still be asked as to what
the extenuating circumstances are that makes the effective and prudent
advice of an instructor to be inappropriate.   Its quite likely that
"we" are missing something very important to you for the simple reason
that you've not bothered to tell us.

> Or that someone's being rude.

Oh, you haven't yet seen rude, kid.

One might suspect that this kid's attitude makes it such that
instructors tell him that he needs to start off with 100 lbs of lead
weight (so as to assure the proper buoyancy) and jump off from a boat
in the middle of a large lake...

Has anyone noticed that John Hansen dissapeared just as this little
pimple showed up? Their posting details don't exclude each other, and
Hansen has a definate tendancy to troll, ignore almost all advice,
respond to anything and everything just to keep a thread going, and use
pre-pubscent insults. Makes you wonder...

John's actually busy this weekend; he's taking his AOW training.

IIRC, there's been a periodic troll that uses a New York City IP
address that pops up every once in awhile.  Unfortunately, he wasn't
good enough at it to make a lasting impression.

I did two dives last night and now I'm heading to Black River Falls
and Lake Wazee in about an hour for more, starting with a deep dive.
But, I'm busy most every weekend.

I expect to see a trip report thread on your thoughts about how it all
went, and what you think you learned.

Who says I haven't listened and comprehended? I've listened to many
twats talk about instructors while I'm saying I don't want one, damn
it. That's why I call these people Nazi swimmers, they insist on it.
More people learn to swim fine without instructors. And I didn't like
the way Lee Bell replied to me, go read it again. By the time he says
"you figured incorrectly" doesn't that sound rude to you? Well it does
to me, I don't care how many of his friends here try to cover his a.s.
By this time I know he's a rude a.s and when he gets to the part "Yes,
get lessons from someone qualified to teach you to swim." it sounds
sarcastic from some a.shole and like some Nazi order.

Yeah I know how to swim, but I'm still nervous about floating in 8 ft.
of water regardless of whether or not I know how to swim hence my
questions in the first post, which obviously many people here chose to
ignore and got stuck on instructors.

>Even if the answer is Yes, the question must still be asked as to what

There are no "extenuating circumstances", the problem is people here
don't understand when someone says they don't want an instructor. They
want to hear what they want to hear and that's "ok I'll get an
instructor". If you say no you'd think you insulted their mother. I
bet a lot of these people are instructors by the way and short on
money.

Oh I haven't huh. Come to New York and I'll show you rude. Though
obviously it's not limited to New York as this group shows. A lot of
people in this group need to learn manners.

No, it sounds blunt, but blunt and rude aren't the same thing.

Rude would be calling you a ignorant twat.

I'm an instructor, but that's not my profession.  The best advice that most
people on here could give you is to find an instructor.  Beyond that, the
general feeling is *probably* that any other option is not acceptable from a
safety standpoint.  If you've come to a different conclusion, good for you.
There's zero reason to blast those who feel that your life may be worth more
than you've calculated.

> Oh I haven't huh. Come to New York and I'll show you rude. Though

Someone from New York is going to teach us manners?  This is going to be
good.  Do we get lessons on how to watch a group for a while before posting
to see who the characters are and how the group interacts?  Ooh, do we learn
how to counter rudeness with more rudeness.  I've heard that works really
well, but I've never actually figured out how it works.

Ok blunt, I'll give you that. People should learn not to be "blunt"
cause it could be interpreted as rude. I never give a "blunt" reply
because I don't want the other person mistaking it for rudeness. Now
Lee needs to learn some of this sh.t. Is he a robot, or a Vulcan?

I'm not gonna teach any of you manners, your supposed to learn that
from your momma. I know I have manners unlike many people here. Just
because you live in New York doesn't mean your automatically rude. And
yes when someone's rude to you you should be rude back to them. That
is a mentality in New York, but also round the world.

I'm not trying to escalate anything.  I'm trying to explain.  Lee feels that
learning to swim without proper supervision (generally supplied by an
instructor) is not safe.  That being the case, he will not recommend any
other alternative.  It's all very simple really.  In many circumstances, I'm
sure he'd happily tell you that getting a book is just as effective.
Swimming isn't one of those instances.

Perhaps you have, but you've then unforunately failed to then be able
to successfully communicate back that you have learned.

>I've listened to many twats talk about instructors while I'm saying
> I don't want one, damn it.

Okay, fine - you don't want a (formal?) instructor.  Can you please
explain why this is what you want?

The reason I'm asking is that we've all heard the saying, "The customer
is always right", but the longer version is:  "The customer is always
right, even when he's wrong".   Do realize that no one here is trying
to sell you anything, so the potential for bias is low.

> That's why I call these people Nazi swimmers, they insist on it.

That may be your interpretation of what they said, but its not my
interpretation, nor is it what I believe that Lee would have ever
intended.  Please do be aware that the reason why most good USENET
guides suggest that newcomers lurk for 2 full weeks before posting is
specifically to try to get a feel for the gradiant of "polite-->rude"
gradiant that exists within a particular discussion group:  what you
perceived as rude was polite by these local standards.

> More people learn to swim fine without instructors.

To be honest, I don't know what the contemporary norm is; I would have
expected an upswing in formal instruction because of dual-income
families.  Not that it really is important to me:  I'm personally more
interested in ones "watermanship" proficiency, not simply being able to
survive long enough to doggy-paddle to the side of the pool and claim
that one is a "swimmer".

To that end, perhaps this webpage might be sort of what you're looking
for?

<http://library.thinkquest.org/J0112803/watermanship.html>

Sorry you feel that way.  FYI, this medium is fraught with the
potential for misinterpretation, and your taking offense is merely just
the latest example of it.

Personally, I suggest that you chill out and stop assuming that
everyone is being an a.shole on purpose just to piss you off, for as
the old saying goes:  "when everyone around you is an a.shole, its not
them - - its you".

And please don't take this the wrong way, but "you're new here".
There's preexisting social norms that the regulars intuitively know,
but we ourselves can't actually write them down to explain them to
someone new.   In general, newcomers are expected to make mistakes and
overall, they're judged (right or wrong - sh.t happens) based on how
they respond to having some feathers ruffled.

The way that this applies is that the general culture in this specific
group tends to be that there is a low tolerance for those behaviors
that tend to corrolate to divers who get themselves killed.  While
scuba diving is generally a very safe sport, it does kill, and we have
lost members and friends over the years.  For example, just within the
past month, we've had a previously active member in a coma from a
nearly fatal Arterial Gas Embolism (AGE) hit on a dive (she's now in
Rehab).  As such, there will be an ebb and flow to the group's
emotional subconcious tolerance for arrogance and bullshit regardless
of its source.

Do you know why you're nervous about floating in 8ft of water?

For example, is it because you're not a strong swimmer?  (watermanship)
Or was it just one Jaws movie too many <attempt at humor>, or
something else that you can put a finger on?

IMO, you're putting words into their mouths, at least the way that I
read the thread:  I perceived the dialog as:

1:  "How do I Learn how to ...?"
2:  "Get an Instructor"
1:  "How *DARE* you make such a suggestion!
2:  (WTF???)

> I bet a lot of these people are instructors by the way and short on
> money.

There are some instructors here, but most are not.  And for those
instructors that are here, they're the sane ones.  Most of "That Type"
of Instructor that you're concerned about were Railroaded out of here
long ago because they couldn't take the heat.

Which borough and so forth?

BTW, if you're near Brooklyn...

BTW, does anyone know how George Horn is doing?  I just tried his
"ScubaDivine" website, but it appears to be gone.  I also don't see his
Scuba/Biker shop listed in Yahoo's yellow pages.

Otter, if you're close by, George's address was:  SCUBA DEVINE 3180 88
FULTON ST. BROOKLYN, NY 11208.  If you feel mischevious, tell him your
name is Michael Black and you understand he knows where to find
Seahorses this time of year in Flushing Bay :-)

No, Lee is not being rude.  Actually, it sounds like he's trying to save
your a.s.

Example given:

Yeah I know how to swim, but I'm still nervous about floating in 8 ft.
of water regardless of whether or not I know how to swim hence my
questions in the first post, which obviously many people here chose to
ignore and got stuck on instructors.

If you are nervous about floating in eight feet of water: Quit diving.  You
will kill yourself, and endanger other people.  Any phobia of water, in any
way, should preclude you from diving.........unless you can get over it,
which can be done through experience.  I have had a number of people tell me
that can't try diving because of a mask on their face, and resulting
chlosterphobia; it's not for them.  There is no shame in it.  It's a
personal descision.

It sounds like you are not comfortable in the water to begin with, let alone
submerging in it.  This is a very bad sign, so I'm not sure why you pursue
something you are not comfortable with.  This fact has nothing to do with
the NG, and what people feel.  It's just a fact of your stated frame of
mind.

You have obviously not read enough of the many posts made. I can swim,
I can dive, and I can float on my back. Now I want to learn how to
float in an upright position in deep water. I wish I could learn the
upright position in 5ft or less of water, but the only way to do it is
in water that you submerge your whole self into. Lee was rude or
responded in a way a lot of a.sholes do, like answering in between
your sentences and paragraphs with snippy little comments that
contradict you with no further explanation and annoy the person. He
makes these snippy little comments and then fully knowing I'm not
asking for no instructor, but for some technique, he goes "you get
someone qualified to teach you". An it's like he's trying to get
underneath your skin. He says it like it's the law or I need a permit.
In Nazi style after those snippy comments. Go read it again. If
anybody doesn't think so they're dense. If you want I can show some of
you people. I'll cut and analyze every single sentence in your posts
and say "that's incorrect", or "not so", or "wrong", or "you figure
incorrectly", with no further explanations just to piss you off.

Thanks for the compliment, George.

I merely gave him the rope.  That Otter chose to not respond to his
alledged 'swimming problem' merely means that he then used that rope to
hang himself as YA lame troll.  Pity.

FWIW, it continues to amaze me that with ~75% of the world's surface
being covered with water that there's so many people that can't swim
worth a lick.  One can perhaps understand it in those parts of the
world where the water contains hippos and crocodiles, but that's not
anywhere in North America.

And in the US, many colleges in the USA used to have required their
students to pass swim tests prior to graduation; it seems to have
originated as part of a Red Cross effort to teach swimming skills to
all Americans, circa World War I.  But for the general public that
didn't go to college in those days, it probably was limited to
organizations like the Boy Scouts.

I do recall that one of my father's favorite stories about going
through basic training in 1943 was how many recruits tried to "fake it"
in the pool at Paris Island.  Unfortunately for them, there was a deep
end to the pool shallow-to-deep transition was a Cayman-like vertical
dropoff :-)

And a personal experience years ago (Bob Babecka, where are you?) makes
me wonder if Otter is able to open his eyes while "diving" underwater.
I'm betting not.

(1) Where did Lee say anything about you MUST have an instructor?
(2) What was it about Lee's reply that was rude?
(3) Why we should believe YOU are not the a.shole based on the above
