Grumman-581 - 01 Jul 2006 19:13 GMT > done Thanks... In some newreaders, HTML posts show up as a very long single line of text... A bit irritating when you have to scroll over into the next county to read the text... <grin>
I looked at the website and wasn't all that impressed... Very limited selection and you really don't know what you're getting... Replacement parts might be problematic on the regulators... Personally, I would prefer to just get a good used regulator off of eBay... Even brand new name brand ones are not that much more expensive at Leisure Pro... The Oceanic reg there is around $120-130, IIRC...

It also had this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Wise-Man-Acceptance-Statue-Gay-interest_W0QQitemZ5657907594Q QihZ007QQcategoryZ1467QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
Personally, this is not the type of store that I would buy dive equipment from... Perhaps your diving needs are a bit different? <snicker>

I've bought some things from Leisure Pro without trouble. I did not buy any of my life support equipment there.
As for renting being dumb, it's not so dumb if you don't yet know quite what you want. Buying something and then finding something you like a lot better is really dumb . . . well, really expensive, anyway.
Don't let us stop you though. I guarantee that most of the people in this group have bought things they thought were a good deal only to find out that it's not a good deal, at any price, if it's not what you wanted. Why should you be different?

If yer going to dive a whole lot more, you need to consider the cost per dive for equipment you buy, and you need gear that best suits all those dives yer going to be doing.
Generally - not always, but generally - that means better grade gear from sources that will honor both written warranties and "unwritten warranties".
"Package deals" generally - not always, but generally - suck.
Get some experience with different gear. Borrow, rent, whatever, until you have a good feel for what's out there, what kind of diving you will be doing, and what gear suits yer style and budget best.
Crappy gear is not inexpensive, and you may find that poorly chosen gear is the most expensive of all in the long run.
Proceed with caution.

Lee Bell - 01 Jul 2006 21:38 GMT > Stuff about buying off brand dive gear. Keep in mind that regulators are normally serviced annually and that, in virtually all cases, proprietary parts are involved in the service. Be sure you know where you'll get service and are comfortable that both the technician and the supplier of parts will be around for years to come.
To give you an example, I have a very high quality Sea Hornet first and second stage regulator. I won it in a lottery held as part of a dive trip a group from another forum took in 1999. What I didn't know at the time is that there's nobody in the United States that can service the first stage.
So far, the regulator has worked fine without service, but when it no longer does, it's going to cost me more to send it to Australia, where it can be serviced, than the regulator is worth. It's a very popular regulator there. It's almost completely unkown here.

I emailed two gentlemen who were bidding on a Tommy D wetsuit on Ebay. The seller had purchased it, got it wet in the shower and tried it on. It didn't fit but Tommy D wouldn't take it back. Anywho, I emailed them when the bids reached $100 +shipping. Tommy D was selling that exact same suit new for $89 on his/their regular website.

Some URLs and specific questions would be nice.
Your query is rather large.

You never know. Most of us don't want to be the one to find out. Generally, we advise buying locally, from someone you can talk to person to person and who will be there if/when there is a problem at least until you're sure you know exactly what you want and why. Once you know what you want, buy it from anyone you trust that is offering the best deal.

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > thanks again > Don't know anything about TommyD, but I sure recognize the equipment. I get spam from the OEM in Shenzien almost every week. We went to Hong Kong in April and took a side trip to Shenzien and saw that there were five different grades of stuff ranging from cheesy Trident grade to absolute crap. And having your name put on the stuff costs nothing if done at the time of manufacture and you order in case quantities.
I think Tommy D may have fallen for the lure of becoming a big time scuba supplier. Best to pass on this one Bubba.
While I am a big time supporter of most dive shops, if you have to go mail order, I think the other guys' suggestions of going someone like LeisurePro and getting recognizable brands is a much better bet.
Just my $.02

Good sh.t, sh.t, or bad sh.t.
Starting with sh.t.
