Emily - 17 Jun 2006 04:58 GMT I got certified about eight years ago, and never did any diving after my open water dives. I finally have the chance to try again, but am not sure where to start. I've been to several shops about a refresher course, but they've all been pretty rude. Is this normal? What do I need to do to get back into this?

A huge majority of divers, especially those "trained" by "puppy mills" never dive again.
If you are for real, look for a local dive club or two, go to a meeting or two, and start there.

I finally have the chance to try again, but am not [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > If you are for real, look for a local dive club or two, go to a meeting or > two, and start there. Actually, the reason I never dove again is because I started flying at least 5 days a week shortly after I got certified. Kind of hard to get a dive in with that kind of frequency - and my training wasn't any kind of "puppy mill" thing. Believe me, I'm familiar with the concept.
I guess I was wrong even trying to get back into it. Hell, I thought pilots were unfriendly towards outsiders.

That definition is yours.
Most dive shops exist and thrive on selling gear and training to divers that are new and ignorant.
Hence snorkel sales.
If you are real, and really want to get back into diving, you came to the right place.
yahoo@yahoo.com doesnt exactly brand you as anything or anyone real.

What you need to understand is the troll and liar level of integers here.
If you are for real, my email address is real, as is Stars.
Star is a very accomplished and known instructor. And real. And a lady.
By all means, dont trust anyone here who has no real e-mail address.
No one is picking on you, if you are for real.
If you are for real, and have the brains God gave a flea, the information and contacts you seek are readily available.
Emily - 17 Jun 2006 05:37 GMT >> Why would I not be real? I do not use my real name or email address on >> newgroups for security reasons. I like to keep my address my own [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > If you are for real, and have the brains God gave a flea, the information > and contacts you seek are readily available. No, actually, the contacts I seek AREN'T readily available. If I had a clue where to go from here, I wouldn't be posting here. If you think that means I have the brains of a flea, good for you. I really don't care what some random person think of me.
And believe it or not, I am not exactly new to usenet, and have never had an issue with a fake email address.
Jerome's Sock Puppet - 17 Jun 2006 06:32 GMT > No, actually, the contacts I seek AREN'T readily available. No, really, they are. If I'm smart enough to do this, you sure as heck are. Collectively, we share a brain. So give yourself a little credit.
Where in Tejas are you. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a dive instructor down there somewhere that will take your business.
JRE - 17 Jun 2006 11:55 GMT <snip>
It would be helpful to know what part of the country you're from if you want anyone to give you specific pointers.
If you only have an OW certification (sorta like Private Pilot without Instrument Airplane), my suggestion would be to ask around your area for good instructors and go take an Advanced Open Water course. This will refresh your skills and perhaps teach you some new ones. Along the way, you'll meet some divers you can get together with to go diving later.
To me, diving seems a lot like flying. In both, careful planning is essential, it looks easy when it's done competently, and being able to do the emergency drills matters. Oh, and both are in indecent amount of fun...
John Eells (real name, not real e-mail address; I hate spam!)
Emily - 17 Jun 2006 16:01 GMT > <snip> > [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > > John Eells (real name, not real e-mail address; I hate spam!) I'd thought about the Advanced OW, but don't really know how to go about finding a good class. Then I also realized that since I don't know anyone else who dives, it might be a pointless exercise. Does it matter what agency does the AOW? Does it have to be the same one who did my OW?
Dillon Pyron - 21 Jun 2006 04:26 GMT >> <snip> >> [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] >anyone else who dives, it might be a pointless exercise. Does it matter >what agency does the AOW? Does it have to be the same one who did my OW? No, it really doesn't matter, or shouldn't. Some instructors with big egos will say "oh, you have XYZ. You're not really qualified". Bullshit. It's more about your experience. Which is what I'd suggest you get, first. Do some diving, then work on your AOW.
Where are you located? Someone mentioned Tejas. I'm in Austin and am a PADI OWSI.
And you should be able to figure out how to reach me.

Three are quite a few macho types here. I'd venture to say that most of those who have been diving longest fit that description. Not all, of course, but way back when some of us started diving, the only people that did it were known to have a death wish. The idea that diving is safe is a relatively recent concept. Most who have been diving a long time were, and still are, risk takers.

Now given that there are about 25 species of seahorses with most being found in tropical areas, it is a reasonable question to ask if the New York City species is tropical or temperate.

His voice, as recorded on my answering machine about a week before he went missing, was not one of a suicidally-depressed man. To this day, I'm still kicking myself for erasing the message. It could have brought me riches on eBay.
Lee Bell - 21 Jun 2006 16:27 GMT > It's been a few years since I've visited this group. Did something > happen to Black? Indeed it did. Sometime around the end of 2002, he went diving and didn't come back. As I recall, his boat trailer and car were found at the ramp. He was never found. I don't remember if they found the boat or not. There's been some official speculation that it might have been suicide, but I don't think anyone knows. It turns out he had some rather severe employment and other personal problems as well as being one of this group's less stable personalities. He's presumed to be dead.

We get trolled here real often, and the "format", if you will, you are using is a common one to trolls.
You are going to get a mud check or two (especially since some of us other than Hanson already have women in their lives), and when the gang gets to know you, there will be no end to the wealth of information and dive connects you can acquire here.
I dont think you do or dont have the brains of a flea, I dont know you, and niether does anyone else. I can tell you right now that if you actually are a veteran to usenet, you need a bit thicker skin.
With an address like yours, safe money would bet that you are trolling.
So, hang around a little bit, maybe e-mail a few people behind the scenes, and everything you are hoping to find will be found.
If you are for real, get with Star.

As far as humbled, nah, personally it's a trait I strive for rather than am forced into, and I'll grant mutual respect for your unrelated talents. As far as some of the others, reckon they just see stubborn. Failure to accept error doesn't mean you're correct.
