There is an imminent project in the works to renourish beaches in Boca.
These projects are an abomination for a number of reasons, not the
least of which, is that they don't work and they get paid for with
your dollars. Palm Beach private beaches were recently redone with FEMA
money, and buried well known reefs with silt from a turbidity plume
that was orders of magnitude outside permitted levels and extended for
miles.
This time, they want a variance to triple the allowable turbidity.
Reef Rescue is opposed to the variance (if not the whole project).
Please visit this page: http://www.reef-rescue.org/bocaDredge.htm
...and click on the mailto links. It will provide pre-filled emails to
the neccessary parties objecting to the variance, requesting an
extension for public comment and a public hearing.
Outlanders are stakeholders too. In fact, tourists probably carry more
clout than locals. The almighty buck in rules Florida and nobody brings
more of the here than tourists.
It couldn't be any easier. All you have to do is push a button. Time is
of the essence. The period for comments ends today.

PS there will shortly be pictures on the website showing the mess and
ruination, so keep checking http://www.reef-rescue.org

If you haven't sent emails yet, it is still useful, even though the
original comment period ended. You can go to

links, feel free to add your own comments.
Every bit helps, and as I indicated before, out-of-state responses
might well have more weight than local.
Interesting sidebar about beach renourishment: The permits specify the
number of sea turtles that may be sucked up and destroyed. AFAIK, there
is no differentiation of species, and nobody doing any counting. In the
recently finished renourishment at Ocean Ridge, the number was "29".
