Just after a quick bit of very basic advice please. I'm interested in
doing some snorkelling off the east coast of Scotland and I've got a
wetsuit, fins etc but, like every one I've ever tried my mask leaks
really badly (it's old and cheap). Can anyone recommend a good all
purpose mask, or failing that some brands, and what i should be looking
to pay for a mask that will let me enjoy a look around under water
without constant adjustments and a steady trickle of cold water into my
left eye?

very many thanks.

Put it up to your face and inhale lightly through your nose.

Whatever mask seals and stays there is the mask for you.

......and feels comfortable.   Comfort is huge, no matter what piece of
gear you are purchasing.

 Cool!

Scuba divers use ones kinda like those for OW class, I really ain't sure
why, after that only chicks have them for giving bl.wj.bs in hot tubs.

I never question technique when there's results.

An accoutrement used for snorkeling, of course :-)

And freediving.

That's true.  They're required in order to dive for free in Laguna.

Bullshit.  You can't do anything for free in Laguna.

If you talk your buddy into driving and paying the parking meter and your
local shop owner into letting you top off your tanks off for free, it really
can be done.  Just remember to bring your snorkel.  I've even peed for free
at the Jack-in-the-Box at the top of Cress Street.

Wow... I'm surprised they let you get away with that.  Did you just sneak
right up to the buiilding and let it fly?

A potential line entanglement device normally found in my dive bag just
in case I find a use for one.

Tuba is the french word for it.

Anyway, it's a strangely bent joke of a horn without a
proper taper, which makes it harder to blow the harmonics.

A constant worry for the DIR crowd, because they can't
remember the signal code for " I am finning backwards".

Your best bet with something like a mask is to go to a reputable dive shop
and see which masks they have fit your face properly, usually it will be
more than one brand or style.  After proper fit look for comfort, a mask
that gives you the best view, and then, style.  If you buy a decent mask and
take proper care of it, it should last you a long time.

It's good advice.  It doesn't always work though.  If you can find a shop
that will allow you to test the masks in a pool, that'd be the best.  My
shop didn't have a pool and it took me quite a few trips to find a mask that
worked (and I had to order it off the internet).  My wife found the perfect
mask for her in one of those $15 snorkeling kits at K-Mart.

Our LDS let me take the entire collection (one each in my size) of fins
to the pool on one of their training days after I wasn't 100% happy with
the ones I bought.  (I didn't ask for a refund.  I just said I preferred
my old Rocket fins to the new ones.)  So I was able to compare my
Rockets to all the ones they carried, return the ones I bought first,
and then buy the ones I like best.

(That *that* with a mail order outfit.)
