Just lousy, but Greg has new prosthetics.  Wanna hear some more lies?

   Gorilla trip report coming.

Looking forward to it. Sorry I had to miss it this time (sometimes
family priorities have to usurp recreational fun), but I'll do my best
to make the next one.

   The short version.

   Spiegel Grove;

Seas fairly calm, water 80 deg, vis good.

137 FSW max for 44 min.

      1 hr surface

133 FSW max for 44 min.

   Paradise Springs FW  gorilla rinse;

Mirror surface, water 78 deg, vis variable but overall good.

98 FFW max for 27 min.

      1 hr, 12 min surface

102 FFW max for 41 min.

Damn, almost anyone can make it to 140 FSW, most of those manage to make
it back even.  You computer guys don't even have to think to do it.  :-)

Think Scott's calling us names due to the fact that we, even the
non-thinking computer followers, are smart enough to dive in waters that
don't put the genitals into hibernation.

That takes no brains or balls.

Any fool with even a cheap computer, a 3 mil wetsuit and a PADI card can
dive warm water.

We dive in water where the octopi are bigger than even you;

The thermocline snaps off from 59 to 48 degrees in the summer and 36 to 46
degrees in the winter (due to snow melt, the top 15 to 20 are colder);

There are jellyfish with tentacles that have been measured over 100 feet
long;

Where you dont need a boat, only shoes with soles strong enough to cross a
blanket of razor sharp oyster shells;

Where the women always have erect nipples.

No brainer.

Brrrrr... Even your summer temps are too fuckin' cold...

> Where the women always have erect nipples.

Hell, I saw that today on the afternoon dive with Dixie Divers... There
was one girl there and even though she had a 5mm wetsuit, she ended up
all perky afterwards... Personally, I found a t-shirt and shorts
comfortable enough...

Dive 1 -- 74 ft for 47 minutes... Wreck dive... Could have stayed
longer, but everyone else had already surface and I hung back until
last... They said that we were diving the Ancient Mariner, but it
looked more like a barge to me... Large a.s grouper that was big enough
to swallow Curtis...

Dive 2 -- 63 ft for 60 minutes... Drift / reef dive... Hung back on
this one also to be the last one back aboard... Encountered 3 cables
going from the mainland to some island somewhere... Probably phone and
such, I guess... Encountered very large lobster that I would have liked
to have been able to invite home for dinner...

All in all, I liked Dixie Divers well enough... They provided
transportation to and from the dive sites and let me do my own thing
without requiring me to pair up with a buddy...There was probably only
5 or 6 divers on the trip... The boat (Lady Go Diver) supposedly can
accomodate 28 divers normally... Short trip to the reef, the longest
part was waiting for the drawbridge to open... You are able to unload
your gear *very* close to the boat, but you have to park your vehicle
back up the road a bit... Less than a block actually... Unlike some of
the places around here, at least you don't have to pay for parking and
there were plenty of parking spots...

On the trip out, I noticed the houses along the intracoastal
waterway... Very small lots, but the houses really fill up the lots...
Very expensive also... Houses that I would estimate would be worth
perhaps $300-400K in Houston were a few million dollars right there...
You sure do have to pay for the priviledge of being on the front lines
when a hurricane comes along...

Total gas used -- a bit over 2 AL80s...

If it was in about 70' of water then it probably was. It looks a lot like a
barge now.

Pity you didn't dive her when "Hollywood" John was the Captain. Later, Capt
Rob, who some here know from the dive on the Ocean Explorer a few years ago,
also ran that boat.

Oh?  How were they different?  I'm perfectly happy with a crew that
will leave my gear alone and only be there to grab my fins before I
climb back aboard unaided...

> The curse of cattle boat diving in South Florida.

Well, considering how few people we had aboard, it made for a very
comfortable floating stock yard... I don't think I would have liked it
when it was full, but as it was, it was kind of like a 6-pack, but with
a 'ell of a lot more room... <grin>

Yep, but the size of the boat is what held you up at the bridge. That's what
I meant by my comment, not the number of pax on any given day.

On the next day of diving with them, the bridge was visible from the
dock, so we just waited around there letting everyone get their gear
ready while tied up and untied just a bit before the bridge was about
to open... For that one, we just had a leisurely trip down the
intracoastal waterway and then a short trip out to the dive spot...
Worked out pretty good... Just left tossing on the BC, putting on the
fins, and clipping in the tanks right before hitting the water...

Left Ft. Lauderdale at around 11:30 Sunday... Stopped off at Ginnie
Springs for a dive late Sunday afternoon... Showered, cleaned up, and
got back on the road...  Continued north on I-75, but took a detour
through Georgia by accident... I think I was on the phone with Curtis
and missed the I-10 exit and didn't realize it until I encountered a
"Welcome to Georgia" sign... Ooops... Plugged in my location to Street
Atlas and it came up wth a route through the backroads of Florida to
get me back to I-10 without having to completely backtrack I-75...
Initially it was some county road that was narrow and didn't have much
in the way of lane reflectors nor any sort of shoulder on the side of
the road... It made it rather interesting when a tractor-trailer rig
was coming from the other way... His wheels were over the center line
and I had to go far enough to the right that my tires were in the
grass / dirt on the side of the road... Went through some small towns
and finally made it to I-10... Made it to a bit west of Tallahassee
that night... I think I made it past the CST/EST border... Stopped off
in the Gulfport, MS and New Orleans areas on the way back and wasted a
couple of hours looking at the damage from Katrina... Got back home
(SW of Houston) at 23:00 last night... Time to clean all the Florida
dirt and sand off of and out of my truck today... Kaitlyn was bummed
out that I hadn't brought a small gator home for her...

Because I've never seen 'em.  Don't forget, I used to dive dry in cold water
before I was rebaptized in the warm.  Much better nipple activity when you
can convince babes that it's warm enough to dive in a skin in upper-70s
water.

I'll go one better than that.  I convinced my wife to let me sew her a
diveskin.  It came out quite well and fits her almost perfectly.  Anyway,
it's black on the bottom, maroon on the top, and has a white stripe running
across the top of her breasts (all in lycra/spandex).  The best part is that
the white part becomes almost completely transparent when it gets wet.
She's also convinced I didn't plan it that way.  :-)

You could also sew a suit using the self-dissolving thread that doctors use
to stitch wounds.  Probably wouldn't get away with that one more than once,
so let me know when you try it.

137 on air, that 7 might just look like a 4.  Anyways, I have 141 FFW
locked in, so doing some math.......

Checked my computer... First dive was 140 for 28, second dive was 133
for 25... Both were to the sand on the west side of the ship...

Oh, forgot to add -- 1st dive was with 2 AL80s only filled to 2000 psi,
2nd dive only used a single steel 72 for the dive and the deco...

Had planned to get them all refilled yesterday, but Fill Express had
closed early... Went over to Splashdown to get them filled up, but
parking is crap over there and I didn't fill like hauling 7 tanks a
block or so from the nearest parking spot, so I decided to pass on
them... Got them filled up at Fill Express today... The tank filler
dude had a problem calculating the gas that went into the 4
steel-72s... He came up with this figure that didn't sound at all
right... I calculated it myself and to get his figure, all the 72s
would have had to be pretty damn close to empty, which some of them
weren't... Their procedure appears to be to put like capacity tanks
together and equalize their pressures and then fill all of them in
parallel to the same pressure... So, for my 4 steel-72s, they equalized
at 1700 psi (one or two of them were damn close to full apparently)...
His first calculation came up with something like 237 cu-ft of gas
added to them... That didn't sound exactly right since they would have
only held 288 cu-ft if they were all completely empty... After I told
him that it didn't sound right, he came back with the right number --
around 75 cu-ft... Surprisingly, they don't have a computer program to
help them with this... They just expect the fill guy to be able to
calculate it with a simple calculator... Yeah, I would like to think
that someone with at least a high school education should be able to
calculate it, but it leaves room for error (obviously)...

Since they charge by the cu-ft, I had originally thought that perhaps
they had some sort of meter that measured the cu-ft of gas that was
pumped into the tanks... Turns out that they just use pressure
differential to calculate the cu-ft...

The calculation is probably something like this:
(([ending pressure] - [starting pressure]) / [rated pressure]) * [rated
volume at rated max pressure]

As a side note, most (if not all) of my steel-72s were older than the
fill guy... Starting to make me feel old...

They use the old cave divers' "base line" of "x" cu ft/100psi for each
size tank

I followed Curtis down on the first dive and got into a little washout on
the port side of the hull. I showed a 140' max.....and no digging.

Great diving, great company... Sorry you couldn't make it...

Here's the list of people on the dive:
Curtis (aka Magilla)
Lee
Limey Dave
Mike Gray & wife
Rick Simms
Greg & Jayna (sp?)
Al Wells & wife
Andy (aka Nitespark)
me

Rick also brought his wife along for the trip, but she doesn't dive...

I determined that although sidemount is a very stable configuration and
it works well in open water and in many Florida caves, it is not
exactly optimal in a wreck dive... Passageways that are wide enough for
a diver with back mounted gas are a bit narrow when you have a tank on
each side of you... On the other hand, when the Grove was still on it's
side, it might have been better... <grin>

I'm still in South Florida... I think Rick is headed back home
tomorrow... Greg should be back in SoCal since I think he flew back
today... Curtis is back home... Not sure about the rest of 'em...

Well, I didn't claim that Janna was your wife, even though I was under
the impression that she was from a previous post that you had made...
Or had you been married before?

My mistake was that if I didn't remember their name, I just assumed
they were the spouse of whomever they were with... Not exactly a
logical assumption, but "wife" was shorter to write than "significant
other du jour"...

Of course. You'd have worn out the old one, wouldn't you, and now, being

Says Carl from his second or third year of cowering in the dark, after
being fingered -yet again- by someone from another newsgroup for the usual

Acutally, no.  I know Scott's a responsible, if somewhat unorthodox,
gentleman.  I'm sure that, like most of us, he's done embarassing
things on occasion, but you couldn't prove it by me.

Of course, I've actually met him.  When were you planning on doing so?

Scott,
As the shitbag in question is in my kill file, I do not see his posts except
those not cut from other posts. The only mystery about him is how a person
that acts like they can't break three digets on the IQ scale actually
managed to get on the internet without help. No child left behind? As I
recall, in my last post to him, I said it was no fun having a battle of wits
with an "unarmed" person. Pun was not intended--at the time :) Love my 9MMs,
and the .44 Mag for heavy stuff :).

IIRC, that was Chris Wolf.  He also wrote a pretty pathetic book.
Fortunately, it wasn't the worst book I have ever read.

You mean the part about where grabbing the same weights that you use
for a full 5mm FJ wetsuit is not exactly right when you're not wearing
*any* wetsuit?

Tried it with one less weight yesterday... Better, but still too much...
