I just finished reading The Last Dive, which chronicles the experiences and
deaths of divers Chris and Chrissy Rouse. Interwoven into Chowdhury and
Rouse stories was the history of diving to present day and the evolution in
sports diving - deeper, longer, farther.
I had an uneasy feeling reading the book as I could see where this was
going. The Rouse's step by step progression with every adventure emboldened
them to seek that next greater adventure. I could see where the law of
diminishing returns played out here. They kept pushing the limiting,
pushing the envelope on sport diving and it only took one mistake to kill
them.
I am not sure how much a non-diver would enjoy this book, but if you are a
diver, it makes for interesting reading and the backstory on our
hobby/pre-occupation/lifestyle.

Non-divers? Don't give it to your Mom to read...like somebody I know...

The old, "I will just by her the present that I want so I will end up with
it" trick.

It wasn't long before I was rooting for the sharks.

That's the #1 reason I don't read these while driving.

I watched "Open Water" last year with 16 members of my dive club in the
Salon of the Cayman Aggressor. Just imagine what it would be like to
critique such a "factual" movie such as that one with a group of divers!
You'd have thought it was the biggest comedy hit of the year.
Or as the New York Times review of the movie read: "This time, you'll root
for the sharks." (I believe that was the entire review.)

Rred it shortly after it came out.
Decided to put a post-it note by every incident where someone broke one of
the rules/guidelines of safe diving
Just about ran out of post-its.

My sympathy ran short after the "Kamikaze" DPV incident.

Looking at the book now, a little suprised that quite a few of the
people mentioned in the book have since died (but for me just even one
person is one too many).
