UWATEC Aladin Prime Not Connecting

I've written to UWATEC about this problem and they have never returned my
email. Perhaps someone here can tell me what is wrong:

I purchased an Aladin Prime when I was in the Philippines. I dived once
with it and then, after my vacation I cam back home. I purchased an IRDA
for my computer. When I place the Prime at the IRDA, the computer says it
is linked to an IRDA device, and the Prime itself shows an icon that says
it is linked. However, the Smarttrak software, when I click download dives,
states that no Uwatec Dive Computer can be found.

Has anyone else encountered this and if so, what did you do? Taking the
computer back isn't an option unless I go back to Sabang beach in Puerto
Galera again.

I also must say I am surprised and a little offended at UWATEC not
responding to my question. Not very good service after sales whatsoever.

I have the same setup and haven't had any problem, but am by no means an
expert on this.

This might be a stupid question: Is it possible that you've already
transfered the dives?  If you have and the software is set up to only
transfer new dives it'll give yo a "no new dive data" message when you try
to transfer. Do this to check it:

Start the SmartTrac software and turn on & align the Prime with the IRDA
port.

Click on "Dives" on the menu

Select "Transfer"

If the "All Dives" button isn't selected, select it and then click "OK"

If that doesn't work maybe you can use the slower transfer speed on the
Prime.  It's under the Set 2 menu on the Prime

Also try the "Dive Computer Settings" under "Options" on the menu.  This
should verify that your PC and dive computer are actually communicating.
That might be good to know if you ever get in touch with somebody from
UWATEC.

Good luck
Tom

Hi Tom,

thanks for your reply.

As for all of your questions. Yes the computer is set up to receive all
dives.

As for your troubleshoting. Thank you. I did check this...the Aladin was
set to lo for transfer, I switched it to hi. It didnt help.

I just clicked 'Dive Computer Settings' on Smart trak and it said it
wasnt connected to the underwater computer again.

Oh well...

I guess I wouldn't reconnend this as a dive computer to anyone and I
have learned an expensive lesson myself.

I've had problems with IFR links for years - getting them to work properly.
Don't know why.  Older portable computers were constantly a problem.  How
new is your computer?  I wouldn't necessarily blame the dive computer for
the problems you are having - although that may be the cause.  Is your
interface one of those recommended by Uwatec?  Have you tried linking to a
different computer?  Are there any setup instructions for you to follow?

Something else to try (if you are using a laptop).

If you are using a desktop computer this will not apply.

Disconnect the AC power source and just use battery power during the
data transfer.

I am using a MemoMouse with my Uwatec computer.  I could not get it to
transfer.  When I mentioned it either here, or in rec.scuba-equipment,
someone suggested disconnecting the PC charger.  That took care of it.

I guess the AC charger was introducing enough unfiltered AC component or
switching hash into the serial communications that it scrambled it.

Dude,

Do you have MacAffee installed by any chance?

Make sure you don't have something else using the same port.  My Palm
HotSync software much be turned off before my Citizen HA or any of my GPS
units will communicate with my computer.  My Windows Mobile software, on the
other hand, doesn't conflict with anything.  Go figure.

Thank you for all the responses.

I do have McAfee, so I looked up the article, and attempted the fix. No
success. in fact, i even shut it down entirely.

I tried unplugging the laptop (the laptop is new - compaq R4000) and
syncing...no success.

It is a USB port to the IRDA so it has nothing to do with ports
assignments.

I tried slow speed and hi speed on the Prime. No success.

I tried a different IRDA device on the computer. No success (but I will
grant that it is not one that has been tested on Uwatec's website).

I tried reinstall of SmartTrak and have the latest version. No success.

I just keep getting the same message over and over and over again...I am
really discouraged about this. But thank you everyone for your interest
and help.

Casey
