According to MapQuest, we're about the same distance from Key Largo -- 1269
vs 1277 miles... I'm driving and planning on hitting a few spots along the
coast of FL and in the panhandle on the way back...

thought we might be able to meet up in Florida and finish the rest of
the way - If I do it Flying in Friday (Miami) driving down to KL then
out on Sunday. Hope i can do it - sounds like fun

All the good guys will be hanging out in Ft. Lauderdale and points north.
If it all works out as planned, Popeye, Magilla Rick (if he makes it) and I
will be at my house in Davie.  I think Greg and Janna are planning on
staying around here too.  Mike and Deborah live way up north, near the
Canadian border, in a place called Boca Raton.  Some dives may be done even
further north, in Boynton.  There are more people coming, whose plans I'm
not aware of, but at least some of them will be in the Ft. Lauderdale area
too.  All told, this is likely to be an even bigger event than Dive with
Greg I was.  Sure you don't want to fly into and stay someplace in the Ft.
Lauderdale area?

You dove with Greg the first time, but were too busy to drink with him (um,
us).  So how come the special treatment this trip out?

He was sitting next to me at the crab place, we were consuming alcohol.
I did not want to go back with you guys to Miami Beach, I live 5

We were trying to consume crab.  Fortunately alcohol is a lot easier to get
in the gullet or I would have gone home sober that night.  Instead I wound
up drunk and covered in crab.  I forgot who drove that night, but it sure
wasn't me.

I think she has you confused with another Dennis who dove with us on the Ft.
Lauderdale boat.  I don't think we drank with him.  I'm diving with
Splashdown the day before the Spiegel Grove.  I can't say yet where I'll be
drinking.

No, I think I'm not confused.  But Dennis didn't come for the rum runners,
or brunk with Mike, nor IIRC or the dinners in Ft. Lauderdale.

Got the SCUDA loaded with whisky.  Now I just need to figure a way to light
the cigar when I sit on the bow of the Spiegel Grove yelling "I'm on top of

One should not make statements like that around engineers... We might just
find a way... Propane tank with O2 mix running a 175,000 BTU burner...

Yes, but you missed some of the other festivities.  All you got that night,
was a bunch of crab juice all over ya.  That's not what you are looking for
this next trip, is it?

We weren't staying in Miami but true enough our respective hotels were in
Ft. Lauderdale.  Seems to me they were approx. 15-20 minutes away from the
crab place.  Greg? You always remember such things better than I do.  How
far (driving time) were we from the crab place.

But Dennis, still and all . . .

Kind of depends upon the size of the dinghy, doesn't it?

9040 lb payload - 2*275lb engines - 200 gallons fuel * 6 lbs/gal = 7290 lbs

Actually, I knew about it beforehand, I just had to do a quick search to
find a link to get the specifics... The military and commercial inflatables
by Zodiac are some pretty serious inflatables...

As well as Raiders and other high performance RIBs.

http://www.raiderboat.com/

Of course, when you start spending over $100K for an inflatable, you're
playing is a slightly different league than your typical Zodiac or Avon
dinghy.

I wasn't going to consider the RIBs... They tend to be more than a simple
"dinghy"... Zodiac has a military RIB that looks like a 'ell of a lot of
fun... Over $100K, IIRC... Around $175K, perhaps?

Yeah, I'm familiar too. They use a lot of 'em fer the tow-boat fleets around
here, just not what sprang to my mind when 'dinghy' was first mentioned.

Well, they were a full inflatable, not a RIB... They're sometimes used as
work boats around oil rigs from what I understand...

 That's worship for sure.

Not to mention the fact your whole posting history belies the fact that

I hearby officially invite Don to join our motley crew, and extend a
guarantee for his (relative) safety as long as he bites his tongue (off)
during his visit.  No complaints allowed for being towed behind the boat, if
you're good, we'll toss (you) in a dingy (not Lingy).

I'm not one of the people on the boat, FYI, and chances of me attending

I'll pay for his dives, though.

It's too bad I suck at trolling.  If I'd managed to work up this kind of

Ah well.  I was toying with the idea of showing up, but seeing as how

Someone recently told me that the truely evil way of doing this is to
tie a substantial amount of weight to the feet using about two foot of
line. Then pitch everything off the stern into about ten/twelve feet
of crystal clear water. Just enough depth so that they can still see
the surface but can't quiet get their head above it.

You just don't have the gift for this stuff.  There's something better than
feet first, presuming, of course, that Don has the equipment and,
personally, I think damsel fish are better than piranha.  They take smaller
bites.

My way gives the individual plenty of time to contemplate the areas
that the fish will be getting to eventually, if they don't bleed out
first. The plains Indians sometimes ensured that the individual(s)
that found the body were suitably impressed at the amount of time the
victim actually lived and the pain that had to be endured during that
time in excruciating terms.

But, I like the idea of using Damsel fish. It would probably prevent
the premature bleeding out.

I don't have to imagine it, I've done it.  The last time we were on a boat
together, one of the divers that was not part of our group had a problem.
Bent or stroke, he lost control of his arms and legs.  He was unable to care
for himself on the surface and had no hope at all of climbing aboard
unassisted.  He was a large enough man that no person or group of people
aboard the boat could get him aboard . . . except Popeye.  Doug went over
the side, brought him to the ladder and lifted him aboard from below.  I
suspect that the victim was very happy Popeye was on the boat that day and
would be quite pleased to have him on a boat in the future.
