send a picture of the victim, you will have a 50% chance of getting help, I
will hold the ears - they blow

I don't know about that. When I'm congested I used Sudafed.

That said, what method is your friend using?  Does he equalize on shore, on
the boat and then again, just before descent?

Is he worried he won't be able to equalize and honking too hard to start
with?

Equalize early, equalize often and do it gently.

Last time I dove with him, he equalized on the boat, on the surface,
then went down to 10 to 15 and hangs there for 5 or 10 minutes trying
to equalize. I usually wait on the surface until he gives me the OK
and then join him.

Tell him to see the doc if he wants to keep diving.

A diving doc.

Has he seen an ENT?

10-15 is definately enough of a difference to cause problems equalizing
if he descends quickly.  better to slowly make your way down to 15,
equalizing every 2 feet, or even every foot if you need too.

If he's wearing a hood, have him flush a little water in. Sometimes you
can get the hood vacuum-packed onto your ear and that will make it hard
to clear.  Similarly, make sure his mask isn't squeezing.

By the way, how does he signal you?  I'm just curious.

I float on the surface or just hang at 5 feet, and watch him

1 to see when it's ok to proceed with the dive
2 to make sure he is ok

OK, I missed this point (if you made it). Why are you hanging out on the
surface or at 5 feet, instead of hanging with him at 15' while he clears?
Do you use that much more air than he does on a general basis?  If you guys
are using approx. the same amount of air for the dives you do together, why
not hang out with him at 15'?  That way, you can really make sure he's OK.

Seems goofy to me, sorry.

Good point Chilly. Not only is it goofy..........its just plain fuckin
stupid and must be a pathetic sight. All kidding aside........these guys
should just stick to snorkeling before one of em gets seriously hurt.

Last time I dove with him, I used considerably more air than he. I
anticipate diving with him in June and will descend with him at that
time.

:^)

Sounds like you are huffing too much in impatience on the surface while you
wait.

I hope you aren't sitting there now with your reg in your mouth waiting for
him to signal you this June. ;^)

Make sure he stops sooner than 15 feet.  DAN had an article several
years ago that said that, if not equalized at five feet, it would be
almost impossilbe to equalize at 15, since the tubes would be totally
closed off by then.

If his buddy is doing what he says he's doing, ie: equalizing on the boat,
on the surface, etc., it seemed to indicate to me, that the guy was
equalized at 5' but pressure increased beyond his control at 15'.  I guess
what we didn't ask is if the guy has tried to ascend a few feet and equalize
again before attempting to descend again.

This guy is ruining your dives and you call him a friend???? Nasal spray
will not help. Have your "freind" strap on 20 more lbs of weight to get down
and tell him to quit acting like a damn pussy. Worst that will happen is a
broken ear drum..............at least he won't have to listen to himself
whine about his ears and he wont kill your bottom time.

Don, I've got a .40 S&W that would like to f.ck you up the a.s.  It's
a light weight, only 135 grains.  But quick.  1300 feet per second.
