1994 Continued: Captain Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd
International Director Lisa Distefano lead
an expedition to the Gulf of St. Lawrence and collect the
hair fibers of molting harp seal pups, initiat-ing
a pilot project that will utilize the hollow seal hairs in
insulated bedding products. The seal brush-ing
demonstrates a non-lethal, cruelty-free alternative to
sealing and the Canadian government's
plan to export seal penises to the Asian aphrodisiac trade.
Shanghai Fisheries of Taiwan contracts to
slaughter 60,000 seals for their penises. Under DFO
supervision, sealers begin the non-lethal har-vest
of molting seal hair and send the first commercial batch to
Kirchhoff Bettwarenfabrik.

We wonder why the canadian government doesn't use the seal
penises themselves.

"Here's a story to warm the cockles of your heart. This rather
shamelessly adorable seal cub robot hasn't been developed so hunting
types can practise their clubbing technique. No indeed, it's been
created with the sole purpose of providing a bit of soothing comfort
for the elderly, the children, the ill in hospital and the just plain
lonely. Stroke the fluffy robot harp seal and it responds cheerfully,
adapting to its owner and learning to respond to its name. It's also
antibacterial and stain-resistant. Oh, and that's not real fur in case
you were wondering..."
