Hi everyone!
Not sure anyone here will be able to help but I have a marine
application that a scuba reel would be PERFECT for. Specifically a
mcmahon. The only thing I'm stuck on is I need to find a way that I can
mark about 10 metres along it in a permanent (and as professional as
possible) manner. I really need to be able to put a mark at every metre
for 10 metres. Has anyone ever had to do this, or are there any ideas
(not a marking pen) you've heard of I might be able to use?
I'm looking to use it to measure objects alongside the boat
Thanks very much if anyone knows of anything!

I marked mine (the whole thing) by knotting at every two feet, and
knotting the number at every ten feet, i.e., 3 knots at 30 ft., 4 knots at
40.
Trust me, buy or borrow a 100 or 150 ft tape measure to do this, and make
sure the line is wet.
Of course, a smaller tape measure would suffice for you.

As Poeye says, knots are normally used for this, but I have marked nylon
line with a permanent marking pen.

Thanks guys, I actually posted this on a boats forum too and got a
great suggestion in a product called rope dip. it's a sort of liquid
paint you can use for whipping etc. It's perfect, comes in 5 colours.
Yeah I agree fibreglass tape measure would be perfect for what I need
actually but I would need the reel to be self stacking. So what I'd
need would really be something like the McMahon reel but with only a 15
mm wide spool. so it stacks like a surveyors tape. if anyone's ever
seen anything like that let me know!! In the meantime maybe someone
will be glad to know about rope dip!
Thanks guys, let me know if any ideas on scuba reel but really narro :)
Happy New Year,
Larry
