Lalin - 10 Dec 2005 02:13 GMT I am planning to spend a week on a live a board this coming summer. Has anybody in this NG used Club Cantamar? Any comments on their operation/crew? Do they dive the same sites as Baja Expeditions? Thanks.

All the best Geo
Lalin - 10 Dec 2005 15:25 GMT Hi George, nice to hear from you! I see that you are still in Canada. Doing any diving up there during the summer? Best regards, Ed

I was spoiled in FL, hoping to do some St. Lawrence or maybe FL this coming summer.

If they maintain their liveaboard like they did their smaller boats, be prepared for a very long swim.
Lalin - 10 Dec 2005 21:26 GMT Hi Greg, could you pls clarify?

> Hi Greg, could you pls clarify? Mind you, this was a few years ago. I came with a large group, so we were relegated to a bigger, slower boat. The head would routinely break down an hour or so into the trips, which involved 2-4 hour boat rides each way. One day's 2-hour return trip turned into almost 4 hours when one engine broke down. I had other issues with the lodging, but then it was the fly season after all. My experiences would make me hesitate to book on their liveaboard without some first-hand reviews, especially with the well-received Nautilus Explorer or Solmar (or even the Don Jose) doing much the same diving. On the other hand, they offer shorter trips, which may come in handy for shorter vacations. If you brave it, let me know how you liked it.
Lalin - 11 Dec 2005 16:19 GMT The Nautilus does not sail the Sea of Cortez when I am planning to go, and the Solmar costs almost double than the Don Jose or Cantamar's liveaboard (however they give you a couple more days of diving). So far I have not find out about any first hand comment on Cantamar's. The Don Jose seems to have some good feedback from people from the NG.

The > Don Jose seems to have some good feedback from people from the NG. From what I've heard, there's are reasons why the Don Jose costs less, basically fulfulling the axiom that you get what you pay for. But I haven't heard anything truly terrible or scary about the boat. On the other hand, Cantamar has run a successful operation for years there so you'd think they must get some things right. Or so you hope.
I'm scheduled in July to go on a boat that's not even scheduled to be put in service until February, so it's a completely blank slate and I'm a bit nervous having only the reputation of the company to rely on. That company, however, has a terrific reputation with nary a negative review, so I decided to risk spending 11 nights and many thousands of dollars on what could end up being a leaky washtub.
From what I recall, the Cantamar people were a family-run operation which included their related dive op, Baja Diving and Service. I already mentioned the problem with their large boats and alluded to the fly problem we had in our room (a really, really, really bad fly problem). Otherwise, the room was OK as cheap Mexican hotel rooms go, with a typical mattress-like-a-rock and very strong air-conditioning, and I don't recall any other negatives about the hotel except the bar tab at the swim up bar where the tiny $4 margarita would turn into $8 if you wanted a double, which was simply another shot of cheap tequila.
Normally I wouldn't complain about such a rip off (perhaps the prices don't seem high compared to other resorts, but trust me that they were very out of range for the sh.t hole that La Paz was at the time, where nice sidewalk cafes in town would sell you a huge strong margarita for $5 or so), except that they also tried to charge us for nitrox tanks that we didn't use and had mixed up some other room's charges with us and ended up being very unfriendly as we tried to settle the bill. So unfriendly that they were actually yelling at us to come back to the office because they thought they had discovered some other charge that our group supposedly owed, but I fortunately had rented a car that I needed to return and sped off into the sunset to safely meet up with the rest of our group at the airport. That marked the fifth and last time I ever had to flee a Mexican hotel, as I've chosen my accomodations more wisely ever since. (At least the guy chasing after our car at Cantamar didn't pull a weapon on us like that time in Ensenada when I was accused of stealing a pillow, but that's a different story . . .)
Me, I'd go with the Don Jose.
Lalin - 11 Dec 2005 22:10 GMT Good luck on your July trip and many many compliments on your web site/videos.

Thanks for the compliments, but I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I don't think I have any video up on the web. I have some photos, but people tell me they suck.
Lalin - 12 Dec 2005 02:34 GMT Isn't http://www.mossmanscubaventures.com/ your web site?

No, you have Greg Mossman and Greg Mossfeldt confused. The latter hails from Calgary, owns the website you found and has not popped his head up here for some time, I think.

Greg (Mossman), I am taking back the compliments for your web site... : - ) Which is your URL?

Real Mossmans don't need URLs to prove they can dive. Besides, the last comment about my pics was something to the tune of the worst the poster had ever seen posted anywhere on the internet. I don't know that my ego can suffer any more criticism, at least until I can redesign my site and post new and better pics. Until then, enjoy the usurper-Mossman's site. He obviously needs all the compliments he can get.
Greg Mossman - 12 Dec 2005 17:37 GMT > Isn't http://www.mossmanscubaventures.com/ your web site? Nope. That's the wannabe Mossman. I'm the real Mossman.
Elliott Goldstein - 10 Dec 2005 20:13 GMT i stayed at Cantamer a few years when it was newly opened. nice place, decent food, way out town but they had a shuttle to go into and out of town. some boats were nice. when i went out in the panga, i wasn't thrilled. good staff. elliott
