Blackbeards is fun, if you like camping. Not much privacy, and the food
is mediocre. Diving is, however, first rate.

email me with questions.

Not too much space and privacy, but friendly, familylike atmosphere.
First class diving and tasty lobsters.

i have done blackbeard and aqua cat in jan. aqua cat is much nicer, more
comfortable and of course a bit more expensive. i thought diving was
so-so compared to other sites like cayman and cozumel.  the shark dive,
however was one of the best.

Elliot,
I was in Curacao in 2001 and stayed at Lions Dive and dove with Ocean
Encounters.  Is Hans still there running the place?  I thought they had
a good operation there.  Did you get to dive the "Superior Producer"?

I enjoyed going into Willemsted and looking around downtown.

i don't recall a hans, but that doesn't mean much. i didn't do the
superior producer. i told them i didn't care much for wreck dives. i was
lucky to get the mushroom forest in on my last day.

I enjoy diving shipwrecks, especially ones with some history or a story
behind them.  Capt. Ramey, took us to the "Superior Producer" and told
us its story.  Seems the cargo of clothes and alcoholic beverage shifted
and the ship started to list and take on water.  The captain radioed to
shore and requested permission to return to port.  The harbormaster
denided permission, fearing the ship would sink and block the waterway
into the harbor.  The captain proceeded back towards the harbor anyway
but sunk in about 120 feet of water before it could make it back.  We
were told that local divers make "quick salvage" of the alcoholic cargo
and for weeks, clothing would wash up on the beach.  Whenever someone
would be wearing new clothing, someone else would walk up and smell it
and say "salt shirt".

Hans was a big guy with an accent.  Appearance-wise, he reminded me of a
60's Sean Connery.

It's the luck of the draw in April.  But you are more likely to encounter
rough conditions in January than April.

Northers come down to the Caribbean in the winter months.  They can really
stir up the seas and it can be darn near chilly sometimes.
