Diver Found Dead On Fort Lauderdale Beach

POSTED: 5:30 pm EST November 15, 2005

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Police say a diver who was swimming alone off Fort
Lauderdale Beach was found dead Tuesday afternoon.  Fort Lauderdale police
said the man was wearing two scuba diving tanks at the time. His body was
found near 2800 North A1A. Investigators said that there was no sign of foul
play. The cause of the man's death has not yet been determined.
___________________________________________

For what it's worth, there was a picture in the article that was too small
for me to be certain, but which seemed to show a jacket style BCD and a
single tank rather than the indicated twins.  Perhaps the diver was carrying
a pony or Spare Air.  I have no additional details at present.

If he was beach diving doubles, it wasn't me.

The picture did not look like doubles.  I have to admit, when I read the
article, I looked closely to see if the kit looked familiar, you know,
manifolded steel twins, long hose, dry suit in warm water.  It looked very
much like a single and a jacket style BCD.

I didn't take a cheap shot, but I won't deny that I was looking to see if
there was one available.

I was just singling out the steel twins in the ocean as an excuse for a
joke.  Hard to imagine one would use steel twins shore diving down there.

In the old days, twin steel tanks were the DIR standard, as was the
admonition that they should never be used when diving wet.  Standards have
relaxed a bit and the person I dive with that's closest to DIR standard
currently uses aluminum twins.  As far as I know, the hard core DIR people
still dive steel twins, and really do wear dry suits in warm water.

Yeah, I know.  Just ridiculous on a beach dive in Florida, I think.

But in any case, it was a joke...

May be it was Bob Crownfield, Jammer, or Ron Lee (even though Bob
never scuba dives and Ron Lee only use Aldora steel tank with a Spare
Air).   The Fort Lauderdale PD is investigating the possibility of

Identity of diver released by police - from the local paper:  <<Police

Dead Lauderdale scuba diver identified

By Herald staff reports

browardnews@herald.com

Fort Lauderdale police have identified the scuba diver who was found dead in
the ocean on Tuesday.

Two sunbathers pulled the body of Gregory Boyce, 43,, of Rumford, Rhode
Island, out of the ocean near the 2800 block of North Atlantic Boulevard on
Tuesday, police spokeswoman Kathy Collins said.

An autopsy has revealed that the cause of death is drowning, Collins said.
Boyce's body still had scuba gear on it, and police said a gauge on the tank
indicated it was full.

No foul play is suspected, Collins said.

Yep.  Everybody born north of the Mason Dixon line is a Yankee.  Rhode
Island is way north of that.  Personally, I suspect everybody north of
Jacksonville, Florida is a Yankee, but there are a few from up that way that
I know have embraced the Southern lifestyle.

I'll say. Rhode Island, the Grand Banks, Scapa Flow, and the Azores. And he did it
all on one tank and could have stayed down longer if he just kept breathing.

Severely humor-impaired Bob Crownfield babbled:

I had posted,

RF> nj>  Some one PLEASE do the world a favor and drown the bastards!

RF> and some poor soul good Samaritan in Ft. Louderdale thought

whether that's humor or funny to anyone is moot (I certainly would not
expect DING DONG Lee to think it funny),  but when Bob Crownfield's
follow-up:

Crownfield>   ling, blissfully ignorant, wrong yet again,

For which Bob Crownfield wins the posthumous award of

rec.scuba's   "Humorless Curmudgeon Lunatic of the Week"

The fact that Lunatic Crownfield treated the JOKE as it if he
found yet another of his alleged "factual WRONG" again,
is a clear sign that he is SEVERELY humor-impaired.

That's a FACT!

Interesting.
One has to wonder what a Rhode Island resident is doing solo diving in
Fort
Lauderdale and how he managed to drown with a full tank.
Lee
---------------------------------------------

Lee,  you pondered two questions and I submit the rather obvious
answers.

Question # 1 --  One has to wonder what a Rhode Island resident is
doing solo diving in Fort
Lauderdale

Answer  --  Because he can.

Question # 2  --   One has to wonder how he managed to drown with a
full tank.

Answer -- He was on the beach gearing up and saw the typical Ft
Lauderdale gals wearing thong bikinis and their 'enhanced boobs'.  He,
being a Rhode Island resident and never seeing enhanced gals in thongs
back home on the beach,  was in shock from a rush of male hormones when
he entered the water. He drowned because he either forgot to put his
reg in his mouth and breathe... or because he was drooling too much to
get adequate air from his reg.

Mystery solved.

PS:  Glad to see you guys made it thru the storm. Heard you had some
damage, resorted to the generator etc.  But bottom line is that you're
ok. :)

Indeed, a possible explanation.  An experienced S. Florida beach diver would
have known that the view from below the surface is much better and much less
likily to get you slapped for staring.

No baby.  He is doing it because he can.  Whether or not he is

Let's see, you can't spell worth sh.t.  It's "you're" (contraction of
"you are") not "your" (possessive of you).  It's "doesn't" not
"doesnt".  Must be a product of that fine education system you have.

You seem to have a problem with people being friendly.  It's just the
way certain people are.  It just seems to be less common in places
like Boston and NYC.  But I get plenty of smiles and hi's from folks
in St. Paul.

Actually, over the years 1995-2000, for instance, there were 1,253,749
people that moved from Florida for the 1,860,772 that moved in.  That's not
millions moving in, nor is it damned few moving out.

After all, your weather sucks.  No one wants tropical humidity year-round as
it's enough of a pain in the a.s to deal with it for a few weeks out of the
year.  And like you said, there's a constant influx of foreigners, making it
overcrowded and filled with people who don't know where they're going.

Maybe not 50 years.

"By 1930, four thousand blacks had been lynched nationwide by white mobs,
vigilantes, or the Klan. Most of these occurred in the Deep South, many with
law enforcement complicity. And while Alabama and Mississippi had more total
lynchings, it was Florida, surprisingly, that had the highest per capita
rate of lynching from 1900-1930."

1. I did not say anything about moving to Florida, I said traveling to
Florida and the numbers are, in fact, in the millions.
2. A million people move from Florida annually, if that's, in fact true,
does not mean that many, or even any are southerners or that they're moving
to the north.  Perhaps they are Yankees who got a clue or, maybe Hispanics
just passing through on their way to the ghettos of the north.

If you say so.

First, let's have a site to support that.  Next, the Deep South isn't
Florida, is it?

The last time the KKK came into a Florida city that I lived in, a few
hundred thousand blacks and whites met and wished them a speedy departure.
They got the message.  Most didn't get off the buses.  The last time I saw a
Neo Nazi march, it was in Portland, Oregon.  I've never seen one in Florida.

The only people that might link hillbilly with Florida must be from the

Me too.  First, I don't expect to be alive in 100 years.  Second, some of us
believe in working smarter rather than harder.  If you had said we would be
as productive as Yankees, I'd have told you that we'd already surpassed your

Perhaps with respect to hillbillies.  With all the Yankees living in

Those ideas were not only stolen from California, they were built by
Californians, for Yankees.  You can't blame that one on us natives.

Only a Yankee would make that mistake.

>
> Ancient history, huh?  So then you won't point at WW II for examples of
> why you refuse to give up your gun?

Not so much ancient history as it is before the period when we were accused
of hanging everybody that differed.

I don't think I've pointed at WWII as a reason why I won't give up my gun.
The German government's treatment of it's citizens is certainly a historical
example of what can happen when a population is disarmed, but there are
plenty of equally good examples since.  The way the government treats the
people of Cuba is an excellent example that occurred entirely within my
lifetime, less than 100 miles from my state.  Recent violence in France is
an even more recent example.

We learn from history so that we don't have to repeat it.  We learned from
our days as British colonies.  We used the weapons others would have denied
us, to achieve our independence.  We wrote our Declaration of Independence,
Constitution and Bill of Rights based on what we learned, all more than 50
years ago.  We have not made the mistakes that led to them since.  We see no
reason to repeat them now.

BTW, it was Yankees who wrote those documents in the first place.  Sometimes
even a Yankee gets it right.  Like I said before.  You don't have to be from
the south to be a good person.  It's just harder if you're not.

> Besides, weren't you born over 50 years ago?

Yep.  FWIW, I didn't hang anybody back then either, not that there weren't a
few around that deserved it.

Actually, they were hanged from real gallows, but not until after they'd been given
trials (nearly 100 years before the Constitution required due process), and there
were only a couple of dozen of them. It would seem that even 300 years ago Yankee
whackos were a bit more enlightened than some of our more contemporary southern whackos.

Regardless,  I see that you still haven't received treatment for your

I was saying that the answer to question # 1, a popular phrase,
"Because he/she/they/it/whatever can."  is humorous.  The act of his
death and the event of his death is not humorous.  The act of his death
was not being discussed.  Lee and I were discussing the wording
"Because he can."  as opposed to Lee's suggestion "Because he can't."
Saying "Because he can't" just isn't the same and it doesn't work
there.  I added  "Maybe not."  to indicate that if someone were as
ridiculous as you as to assume that I was speaking about the act of his
death and the event of his death, then that probably would not be
construed as humorous... and it's like I wrote that just especially for

 No.

We've seen the best you've had to offer, and you seem to be degenerating
into some Fishbre-like mindless shill.

can try to rise to "Full Opponent" status.  I mean...  I could try if
you really need it.  You might be surprised.

But, the fact is,  I realize that you need 'decent opponents"... and
not someone like me who is your superior.  So, let me clarify.  I'll
try to lower my thinking to yours if you really need it,  just so that
you cna  'spare'.  I mean,  I'd only be helping you out for the short
term.  In the long run, you really must try to find a hobby other than
being here all the time Pops.  It isn't heathy.

 Oh, no.

 Not the dreaded "checkmate" again.

Still diving and meeting members (80 so far, with a dozen or more visits
this year alone), while you still adorn Crown Victoria trunklids (facedown)
behind the doughnut shop.

Well yes...  it could lead up to that.  <evil grin>

Sorry to disappoint you about the Crown Vic, but no.  However,  I've
been fortunate to go diving with another rec.scuba member off a
liveaboard that toured St Kitts, Saba and St Maartin this summer.  It
was wonderful and out of five dives per day during the trip, I only
missed two dives from the entire trip.  At any rate, stop spending so
much time on your computer Pops.  Life is too short to spend it typing
to cyberspace. I have to go for a while cause I have stuff to do for
the holidays now. I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. See ya in a few
weeks.

 Sorry, you're right.

Most departments have the Chevy now.

 Well, who was it?

That's why I go and meet them, not barricade myself in hammered and rail
against the President.

Look at the bright side, you've actually got a fair chance at getting him
out of office this time.

 Thanks, Barb.

I hope you choke to death at the table while your husband watches,
smiling.

Come on Bob, certainly this is a shoe in for the "Laugh of the day"
award. Even if unintentional.

The full tank is a mystery. If it was indeed full it's unlikely he dove deep to get
nitrogen narcosis. Also an autopsy would reveal a medical cause like heart attack and
it would mention if he had some medical problems.

Panic.  The water was warm, visibility was good.  He just wasn't
trained for that kind of environment.
