Hi,

can anyone recommend a dive boat operator in Key Largo, FL? I'd like to
avoid the usual "cattle ships" (is this possible at all?)

Thanks, Michael

They're "cattle boats", not "ships"... They might put a lot of divers on
them, but they're still not big enough to be called "ships"...

Been out with them twice for the SG with several others here this year.
If I get back, it's who I'd call.

Silent World is our favorite in Key Largo.  Check to see where they're going
before you book.
Quiesence in Islamorada.

Hi Lee,

thanks for the recommendation, we went on a morning trip with SW,
unfortunately for our already scheduled afternoon trip they transferred
us to Ocean Divers, because all other bookings were cancelled. The
morning trip was excellent, though. We will definitely go with SW again.

Greetings, Michael

Without a doubt. Rick is one of the best around.....and a pretty good dive
shop owner too.

More importantly, his wife is -totally- hot.

And on top of that essential point, he runs a laid back, first class dive
operation, and has gone, not a little, but a -lot-, out of his way to
accommodate us.

I use Horizon divers. Great people, nice equipment and well maintained.
You can book a hotel through them at a good discount and the hotels
parking lot touches their parking lot (The hotels are nice too).

The dive crew is great.

I dived with Quiessence some years ago and they were wonderful.  Small
boats.  Very friendly and accommodating.  Don't know if they're still there,
but if they are, I'd certainly go with them.  DO NOT go with the Pennecamp
dive shop.

Glad you posted this.  It made me look to see if Quiescence was in
Islamorada or Key Largo.  It is.

The last time I dived in Florida was in 1990, and even *I* knew that
Quiescence was in Islamorada, went out of business there that year
without notifying clients who booked dives with them.  Now they are
in Key Largo looking for the same suckers who dive with Pennecamp.

Florida diving sucks.  The DMs don't even get wet.  My review of
diving in the three keys in Florida are in the google archives.

Glad to hear it.  Even the simple sometimes have something useful to share.
Then again, you have more reason to know since you depend on others to guide
your dives.  Some of us prefer to find things ourselves, sometimes even from
our own boats, believe it or not, without a DM anywhere around.  Yes, I took
a poll on this too.

BTW, that would be Pennekamp, as in John Pennekamp State Park.  To the best
of my knowledge, Quiescence doesn't do a lot of trips to Pennekamp.  They,
like most scuba operators in the area, take their customers past Pennekamp
to the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary.

Have you figured out what an EPIRB is yet?

> Florida diving sucks.  The DMs don't even get wet.

That explains it.  Nobody to take your hand and guide you from tourist
attraction to tourist attraction.  That's OK.  Each diver should know his or
her safe limits.  It's good to hear you know yours.

Since you admit that you haven't been diving here in 15 years and you've
previously documented the fact that you've only seen the tourist sites,
you'll pardon me if I don't pay a lot of attention to your opinion on the
subject.  You have no more clue of Florida diving than you do of Greg's or
my diving.

As are my responses.  You were ignorant then too.  Some things never change.

BTW, that's Google.  You seem to manage to capitalize things when you
shouldn't.  I thought you might like help understanding when you should.

Do you, perhaps, have something constructive to add or is your only purpose
a continuation of your long history of ad hominem attacks and cross
postings, you know, the things that you've made a point of criticizing
others for so often?

So, you prefer a guided tour type of dive?  Sounds just like a Chinese
vacation... Everything has to be planned, be here at this time, there at
another time, follow the tour guide, hurry, hurry, hurry... OK, we've got
five minutes to look at this rock... Hurry, hurry, hurry... OK, now the next
rock... Don't daddle... OK, everyone back on the bus / dive boat... Hurry,
hurry, hurry... Don't forget to take photos...

Bllleeeccchhhh !!!

As if anyone is going to care enough to look them up.  Damn, what an
ego.

Last time I was in Key Largo, I went out with Rainbow Reef Dive Shop.
They run boats out of both Islamorada and Key Largo.  The Largo
location was right outside of the Holiday Inn on US1.

Highly recommend.
