"DIR" is an acronym that stands for "Doing It Right".

It is an approach or philosophy for SCUBA diving that attempts to
detemine and use the single best set of equipment and technique
for any type of div.

Opinions on DIR differ widely and are strongly held.
Agreement on what is really "best" is hard to come by.

A reasonably objective overview can be be found at
http://www.sandiegodiving.com/education/items/11.html

(Or do a google search for SCUBA DIR.)

DIR is an attempt by a small portion of the diving community to completely
control every diving decision you might make and to exclude those that it
deems unworthy (unfit) to dive.

Not really, I just thought it sounded funny.

Nevertheless, Chris does illustrate a point: that the D in DIR can also
stand for "Dogma In Rubber" in the sense that within the original
genesis environment (namely, WKPP), there were instances where A was
chosen over B, not because there was any objective proof of it being
any better, but because there was tangible benefit in standardizing on
*something*, so something was picked, so as to receive the benefits of
standardizing.

While it makes sense to do this, in the absence of the "Holistic" and
transparent  explanation of the real underlying objectives, the leaders
of DIR allowed themselves to become a cult instead of a force of
broader  industry reformation.

Overall, very little of what DIR "is" is really anything profoundly new
- its a revival of some old good ideas...they're simply more neatly
packaged for sale.

DIR is only 3/5 off a DIVER the rest seems to be lost and I think the brain
is in the lost part.
