Unlikely, but please feel free to inform me of the names of any hurricanes,
or even tropical storms for that matter, that have impacted SoFla this
season that I may have slept through.

Yep, blame it on Lee... He bought that generator and now the hurricanes are
avoiding Florida so that he won't get a chance to use it...

Hey, up north the same applies to Snow Blowers and winter snowstorms.
...for at least the first year after you buy your snow blower. Momma
Nature then tends to believe that you forgot to maintain it, so it won't
start up when she sneaks up on you in Season#2.

Yeah, they'll hit early next year when his gas has evaporated.
Dammit Murphy!

Looks like we might have spoken too soon... Ya'll still got power over
there? Did Lee finally get a chance to use his generator?

Dunno, I spoke to Lee earlier and he said all is well. I am on the island,
so feel exceptionally lucky to have not lost power in this one. Just about
everywhere else in my city did. Looks like the worst we have to deal with is
a cracked windshield. The damage I've seen today and the power outages are
by far the worst I've seen in this area in my 12 years.

I lost power from about 5:00 PM on Thursday to about 3:00 AM on Friday.
Yes, I got to use my generator. I also found that the cover I put on the
plug installed to hook the generator into the main breaker box did not clear
the plug. Nothing like doing a bit of outside electrical work in a
hurricane. I replaced the cover this afternoon. We lost our land line
phone service somewhere along the line. The main number came back this
morning. The computer line came back this afternoon.
I'll be replacing the screen enclosure on my patio soon, or more precisely,
I'll be replacing the framework and adding some screen to my presently open
air patio. Other than that and a few fronds from the coconut palms in the
front, no damage. The boats came through without a scratch.
We've cleaned up after the hurricane. All that's left is to remove the
extra lines from the boat and put the canvas back up. We'll probably do
that tomorrow.

Good advice, although some people aren't particularly "mechanically
inclined", and thus struggle with the written test.
If Laurel had Physics in high school (and passed) and thought that the
book was a pretty easy & straightforward read, then PADI OW test will be
a piece of cake.
The only caution I would note would be the potential for getting tripped
up on "trick" questions...keep an eye out for weird phrasing & if you
see it, read the question more carefully so that you don't get mislead
by what they're really asking for. They had to do something in order to
try to make people miss some questions.

It certainly is a lot more pleasant than those places where you have to
wear a thick suit & weightbelt...up here in NJ, the surface water temps
are pretty nice, but the bottom's water temps are still around 50F.
BTW, is the back doing better?

learn the dive table stuff

Yeah, this is what most people have trouble with. It's what I wind up
spending the most time on. I think other instructors will say the
same. It's not hard if you just try to understand it a little. If
you've read the book and done the knowledge quizes reasonably well,
it's all about learning skills.

Yes, definitely. Didn't use a computer until 1998? Always dove tables (for
twelve years). In 2002 my computer died at 80 ft coming up from the Devil's
Throat at Punta Sur at Cozumel. Having my trusty Casio G-Shock as back up
for bottom time, and remembering the dive tables helped a whole lot.

Yes, thanks.

Thanks everyone.
No I didn't do very well in school, and that was so very long ago to! :-)
That is why I am so worried.
I quit smoking in April and this is my award. I love to snorkel so I have to
try, I know I would love diving.

It's easier to smoke while snorkling.

Especially when using a hookah.

Laurel, read the book, read it again, question everything. Remember
the class is about you, ask questions, if you don't understand, ask
again. If all that fails, bring the instructor a case of beer.

The test is not written to fail people. Although some do. But they
have no business operating complex equipment like pencils.

There are questions that sometimes have two "obvious" answers. But
some of these are answered by other questions. If you have doubts,
skip it and come back. It's not like you only have 10 minutes to take
the test (my CISSP exam was 260 questions in 6 hours, no breaks. I
passed).

The surface temps in Austin are up to the mid 80s. But at 70 feet
it's still about 65.
