Diving from S. of Cancun

I've got a big family reunion type trip coming up to a resort just south of
Cancun. I love Coz but noticed the ferries from Playa don't leave until 8AM
making a full day dive trip tight on time to get to a dive shop.

How is the diving from Cancun or south of Cancun. Any recommendations are
appreciated. I'm spoiled with Coz and don't want to dive just for the sake
of diving off the mainland if it ain't similar quality.

I've heard that the diving isn't bad out of Puerto Morelos.

I believe that some of the Coz dive ops coordinate with the ferry
schedule. I've been picked up right from the deck of the ferry by the
dive op in the morning. Of course that was the ferry operated by
Aquaworld out of Puerto Aventuras and an AW dive boat in Coz so
perhaps that might alter circumstances.

Then you didn't read my trip report.  It's similar enough to diving wrecks
off S. Florida, but it sure ain't Cozumel.

I haven't dived south of Cancun except Coz and the cenotes. It was
hearsay. I hear people knock Cancun diving but for the occasional type
diver who only gets out once a year or so it's pretty and quite easy.
The winds in January when we're there frequently close the port but
there's always the cenotes.

It sucks.  Try www.seahorsecozumel.com for a good dive op that doesn't start
until 10 a.m. and they'll even meet you at the ferry dock so you don't get
lost.

Get lost in *Cozumel*?  You've got to be kidding... The island isn't
large enough to get lost in... If you somehow manage to get lost there,
I suspect that you probably shouldn't be trusted out alone anyway...

got lost in Cozumel once.  Was very drunk and couldn't find the men's
room, but I did find the lady's room.  Went back and found the men's
room, there were more chicks in there than in their own place.

I miss the old C&C.

LOL, I was going to tell a Coz tequila story, but yours is probably better.
On the other hand, your story didn't have a trampoline or a hurricane in it.

Oh well . . . I'm going to take all the benefit from your story because
Vince said it's OK and expected for me to do that.

Chicks & trampolines.  Please, do tell.

Don't forget about the lashing rain.

Have you tried the cenotes (caverns) yet? How close will you be to
Akumal or Puerto Aventuras?

Yeah, I dove the cenotes about 1 1/2 years ago. Enjoyed it but had a bad
sinus infection which, with a mean depth of 20-25', was quite miserable. I
might take my MIL for a couple of dives there. It's fun but not the kind of
thing I would look to do again personally because after the 1st 20 minutes
of "kewl stalactite, stalagmite" stuff, it gets a little boring.

The resort (Moon Palace?) is about 5 miles south of the Cancun airport on
the beach. Not sure where that is relative to Akumal or Puerto Aventuras.

Very nice resort. Fairly new. About half hour drive from Akumal.

I assume you mean "wouldn't" instead of "would"...

So, compared to "kewl little fish, big fish", etc, it's different exactly
how? <grin>

I don't think so.  Note: it says "*not* the kind of think I would..."

misspelling also added... think should obviously be thing
BayDat - 19 Aug 2005 17:33 GMT
from Playa you can go down to Xcaret, there are some nice drift dives
that way.  Ceynotes are another thing to do, the best folks i dove with
down there are at the dive shop at Shangri La Caribe, located just
north of DWTN Playa on the beach.  They provide Ceynote and sea diving.

enjoy!

You can book your dive trip with Caballito del Caribe, from Cancun
or Cozumel.

http://www.seahorsecozumel.com/snorkel.html

If you book it in Cancun, they can take you to the ferry,
pick you up at 10:00 am AT the ferry on Cozumel side, with the dive
boat, and you're off DIVING (2 tanks or 3;  lunch included if you
book a package).  At the end of the dive, the dive boat will drop you
off at the ferry, and you're off back to the Playa.

and I'm da Feeesh!
