Anyone have any reviews/opinions on Gilboa Quarry in Ohio?  How is the
staff, what are the conditions like, how detailed of a plan is needed to
dive deep, etc?  I would like to go there, but have heard some negatives
about it from a group that is loyal to Whitestar Quarry, and would like
other opinions.  Thanks.

Clearly, the paddlefish of Gilboa shunned them, likely with good reason.

Shunned you too, heh.

And my figments can do -way better- than a weird fish.

Dear Bob,

Ive been to Gilboa, Whitestar, and Portage and all 3 are different.

Gilboa has the most to see, but you have to find a place to park, dump you
gear and then re-park your car.  Or pay to park inside at a "campsite"  As
far as deep diving, my instructor filled out the form.  I think all he had to
do was put down a dive profile.  That water is deep and cold!  (Over 120')
This quarry can get crowded, but then again they all can. Nitrox and air
fills.  http://www.divegilboa.com/

Whitestar has parking a short walk from the water.  Pit toilets, and not much
to see underwater, they also allow fishing.  Whitestar also has the best
platforms at 20' to work on dive skills.  Max. depth around 60'.  Air fills
not sure about nitrox.

At Portage you can park closer to the water.  There's more to see than
Whitestar, chemical tolets.  Don't remember the depth.

I'd love to see chemical toilets underwater.  Too bad I'm not a certified
quarry diver.

The quarry-diving specialty includes a requirement for breath-holding
as long as it takes to drop ones drysuit and utilize a chemical toilet
while on the surface, among other skills.

But DIR mandates using a long hose.

And here I thought it involved using a chemical toilet underwater while
somehow remaining dry.  If I ain't gonna learn a new technique, why take the
class?  I'm a guy and I have a pee valve.

Go PADI, it's not a cert, it's a patch!

I've been there several times and enjoyed it immensely.

I'd be a little wary of -anyone- that would diss one quarry over another.

Why not go to both places?

It's not like an Antarctic expedition.

An American friend of mine - living in Canada - says that in the US, greed
is acceptable but envy is a sin. In Canada it is just the opposite. I would
suggest that envy is our national sport. And no one inspires more envy in us
than our southern neighbor. It is a shame, because any legitimate gripes we
may have about America get lost in a sea of childish wolf-crying.

Dove their once with my wife and brother in law. The dive was to certify
my brother in law and it was a nice place. Teh day we were there it was
great vis, better than the quarry I normally dive in. The facilities
were adequate and I like the sights.
