Im going to San Salvador Bahamas in March. It seems as if this place may be
a gem. Anyone been here and why is it not more popular with divers. If
you've been.....feel free to inform. Thanks in advance!

It's not a gem though it used to be many years ago. Over the last several
years the reefs and walls have been scrubbed by a fearsome hurricane and
attacked by algae that, when I was there a couple of years ago, covered the
coral. Also, Riding Rock, one of the two hotels on the island(Club Med is
the other), has gotten some really awful reviews in the last couple of
years.

There are still some pretty good dive sites, however. But a gem? No longer,
sorrowfully.

It was excellent when I was there years ago (twice) but another poster had a
more recent experience. Avoid the Club Med (like I had to say that). I
recall some very cool coral formations rising like city buildings from open
sand (Cathedrals, I think the site was called). Very striking. The diving is
fairly deep but was pretty good. I'm sorry to have read about the hurricane
& algae damage. It's a cool little island with a couple of nice local bars
(Harlem Club, for one). Very nice people on the island. The dive operator at
the Riding Rock was ok but the main DM had a bit of an attitude (forget his
name offhand).

If you go, please post a report here after.
