Grumman-581 - 13 Jul 2005 14:01 GMT Current plots have Emily headed directly for Cozumel, arriving there in 5 days... Maybe Florida will skate by *this* one... Maybe Texas will get some rain from it -- they really need it...

But our water bill for June was horrendous. I'm keeping the thermostat at 83 during the day and wearing shorts and t-shirts unless I've got a customer call.
Heading to Travis in a little bit. We've got an evening dive and fireworks show planned at Windy Private.

The contract up here in Cedar Rapids is probably going to end in the latter part of August... I guess I won't get to experience a Iowa winter... Bummer... I really had my hopes up that I would get a chance to truly freeze my 'nads off... <grin>

Surface temp was around 80, it was 74 at 40 feet and 68 at 60. Don't know what it was below 70, I was only wearing a 3 mm shorty and a hood.
After going to 70, going back to 30 was so hot I had to open the wet suit. My buddy said he though about peeing in his just to get some colder water in it.

Yeah, last time I was there, we had to tie our gear off to the side of my boat and put it on in the water because we were getting so close to heatstroke just putting our wetsuits on while in the boat... I don't remember a depth where it was comfortable... It went from way to hot to way to cold for a 3mm full suit in just a few feet... Don't remember the actual depth where it changed -- probably around the 40-50 ft level... On top of that, it gets rather dark down there... We had thought that we might be able to find the sunken town that is supposed to be near one of the islands (don't remember the name of the island -- Stearn's, perhaps?)... As we follow the anchor line down, we start going through this surreal scene of old dead trees that you can't see until your right in the middle of them... Even with my HID light, it was dark... Once we got down below the thermoclime, we decided to turn the dive because we weren't able to see anything and it was too damn cold... Spent the rest of the day drinking beer and running up and down the lake in my boat...

I've been to the old millhouse off Windy Point, when the lake was down to 580. Amazingly, it's still at around 670 in July.

During June, Houston only had a trace of rain, but they were saying that there was not a critical water shortage since area upstream from our water supply had been getting enough rain and as such our reservoir (Like Houston) was still in good shape... The last week Houston has gotten a bit of rain and I suspect everthing is a bit better... Grace was complaining about having to water the yard each day after we bought the new house... It doesn't have a sprinkler system yet since we're going to be extending part of the driveway and converting the 2-car garage into a 4-car one plus workshop / office... Kind of figured that it would be best to do the sprinkler system at the same time as they are doing the concrete work since they are going to be tearing up part of the side yard anyway...
When we had tried diving off of Stearns, I seem to remember my depth finder reporting around 160-170 ft... We froze our butts off well before getting down to that depth... Once I get back to Texas in September, I'm probably going to have to go to Lake Travis more often... It's not great diving, but considering what they do for diving around here, it starting to look a lot better...

We get together Sunday afternoons, usually at Mansfield Dam. And during the summer at Windy Point Private (Barstow's) on Wednesday evenings. Last week we had three classes of divers. Those who went with no protection and stayed above 30. Those who thought they were okay and bottomed out at 70 (like me) and the two crazies in dry suits who went to 140. Dry suits? In July? In Texas?

Hell, I can do 170 at Coz and the temperature at depth is pretty much (i.e. I couldn't tell the difference even though I had no thermal protection) the same as it was at the surface... Travis gets *dark* when you get down to any sort of depth...

Still looks like it's heading for Coz... Perhaps Brownsville will get some rain out of it if it doesn't turn northward... If things go right, maybe the Guadalupe will be a bit more interesting for tubing....

I was there last weekend and it was GREAT!!
Seas were practically flat. Viz was 60-80. Lots of fish life. We dove the Atlas tanker and the Carribsea on Saturday and the Papoose and the Spar on Sunday. Water temp was mid 80's on the surface, and lowest was about 73 on the bottom.
