Where to Dive in Red Sea?

I'm thinking of a trip to the Red Sea for some diving. I will be
travelling alone, and want somewhere moderately unfilled with
tourists. Travelling there needs to be uncomplicated. A nice hotel
with adjacent PADI diving shop/boat would be nice. I'm not too
bothered about nighlife and such, but some local culture with
restaurants e.t.c. would be great.

Someone suggested Dahab to me, as an option. Is that a good place to
start? I don't require any courses - just to get on with some serious
diving. I'm expecting a mid-range budget holiday.

Please would people make some suggestions as to what my options are?
Have you done anything similar? Can you recommend anything?

Hi Steve

I can recommend Dahab, not touristy and cheap :-)  Excellent dives - all
shore based - try www.reef2000.org we found them great.  We done two weeks
with them.  They have budget accommodation on site.  Eating out etc. was
very cheap.

Have you thought of a liveaboard?

Yes, but I'm not sure I want to be stuck on a boat. I know they may be
able to visit better sites that have less divers.

Would you highly recommend them?

Steve:)

I've only done one so far, so not sure i'm in a position to recommend.
Cyclone in December '04. Travelled alone, but found the company fine. Am
going on Amelia on 1st Sept.

You can do 3 or 4 dives a day, and there is no time wasted getting up
early to get to the dive centre, then get to the boat, then travel to
the site. Suited me down to the ground.

I suppose if you want some resort life and a variety of restaurants and
bars, a liveaboard may not be the thing, but for diving, you cant beat
it.

Dahab was nice when I was there two years ago. Go there now before it gets
ruined. El Gouna is good if the weather conditions are right.

I am  thinking about going to the tented village south of  Marsa Alam soon.
I have heard good things about it.

That being said I go on a liveaboard once a year in the Red Sea. It cannot
be beaten!

Why not Safaga.
off-shore dives on a dayly 2-dives basis. We had 14 dives last month at

The boss is a former Navy seal.
Great night dives (Tobya Kebir), Panorama reef (south point and shark
point) and spectacular Abu Kifan. Salem Express for those looking for
recent wrecks.

Try it. Cheap (it's close to Hurghada, cheap airfares) and  uncrowded.
