Diving with a knee injury

I'm curious as to if any of you out there have gone diving with a
knee injury.  I suffered a hairline fracture to my fibula (right below
the knee) about a week ago and have a trip scheduled for Belize in two
weeks.  Recovery time from my doc is 4 - 6 weeks, which would put me
in Belize at week 3.  Right now I'm in a large, hinged knee brace,
but I'm planning on buying a less bulky hinged soft neoprene brace
and trying to get in the water.  I'm concerned about doing the
obligatory giant stride entry and perhaps getting out on the ladder.
I'm less concerned about the actual finning.

Anyone out there with a similar experience?  Perhaps an ACL injury or a
badly sprained knee?  I'm especially curious to hear from any diving
physicians out there...

Thanks!!

Diving with no ACL should be OK so long as you avoid any extremes - no surf
entry, no long walks to dive sites with lots of gear, make sure ladders go
down under water so the first step is not too high up thus over-stressing
your knee when exiting the water, avoid areas with current/surge etc so that
you don't have to do much finning, avoid long surface swims for the same
reason. Not sure this really helps you as your problem is with a break in
the bone rather than a ruptured ligament...

I've been diving with a ruptured ACL about a dozen times, no prob's with
giant stride, even off a high pier (~3-4m). Problem is with long walks with
all your gear on if the knee gives way with all your gear on you'll be like
a turtle on its back...boat dives avoid this...also a slight problem getting
up ladders sometimes, but the worst/most frightening was when I felt my knee
give way whilst finning, only happened twice, luckily I was able to stop the
movement so the leg didn't go all the way - it felt like my knee was about
to dislocate under the load of a heavy kick. I also had my knee buckle/give
way in the surf from the waves when entering-luckily just for a snorkel so I
wasn't weighed down, that would be bad...I'm lined up for a reco later this
year.

Cheers.

Yeah, me.  Given a chance to do it again, I wouldn't.

Because of the finning.

If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.

Are you doing a liveaboard?  If not, most all of the boats out of San Pedro
are rollback entry not stride.

I'd be concerned about climbing the ladder, not to mention bubble formation
at the injury site.

Injury site should not be much of an issue, should it?  It is an
enclosed limited area.  A pneumo-thorax injury may cause some concern
but the fracture to the fibula shouldn't be of concern of what is normal.

I'm curious how many groups you're going to post this to and how many times
you want your questions answered.

Why not call DAN?  (Assuming you're a member, of course.)  I've found
them very helpful thus far.

Depending on the dive operation and where in Belize you are going,
you're likely to be doing a back roll into the ocean.  If you do a giant
stride, don't stand on the injured leg/knee.

PS--I am not a physician.
