It's Xmas time and I was asking the wife what she might want. She said a
"hand-held, water-proof vhf radio." Out here in Hawaii, that's a d@mn fine
idea for any kayaker. The currents can be very strong and unpredictable.
If you get swept out to sea, your chances of survival are not great. Can
anyone recommend a good unit?

Tait Electronics in NZ make a few. the NZ navy use some I believe, and
Uniden do too, dunno the actual model numbers/names, I just see them around
when loitering around the boat ramp hoping for a ride.

Any of these would be a great choice.

I've got two of these and love 'em.

Have you considered an EPRIB, even a small class B might be better than a VHF for
what she's doing?

VHF radio is required if you will be 1 mile or more from shore while the
EPRIB is only suggested. We've also got a GPS.
