If you were going to just jump in your car and drive to Florida with no
reservations or plans to stay anywhere with a goal and a hope of finding a
cheap place to stay with good diving options near by and maybe a beach for
the wife, where would you go? I intend to try this in mid-June.

west palm beach

the keys don't have much on the way of beaches, at least the upper keys
don't have much to offer.

Ft. Lauderdale...

Better diving and better beaches than WPB

Yes, get yourself to the East Coast of Florida: Jupiter and West Palm are
good. Stop by any dive shop and pick up a copy of Florida Scuba News. You'll
find coupons for cheap places to stay that offer diver discounts and
reasonable dive packages. Also, Pompano Beach (Ft. Lauderdale) is good. Dive
with South Florida Diving Headquarters. If you do get down to the Keys, the
diving is great. Wonderful wrecks (if you are advanced, don't miss the Duane
and Spiegel Grove), and the wife can shop or hang out at the hotel/motel.
There are plenty of Mom & Pop places with little private beaches, hammocks,
BBQ grills, etc. A few I can think of off the top of my head in Key Largo &
Tavernier: Neptune's Hideaway, Popp's Motel, Conch On Inn, Islamorada Motel.
Also, you can use the facilities (beaches, pools, tiki bars, etc.) at
Holiday Isle at MM 84. You "don't have to stay there to play there" is their
motto.
Have a great trip!

Boynton Beach, of course. Cheap, good beaches, and the best
diving in the US.

I had a good time in Key Largo in Decmber 04.
I made plans but I really didn't have to.
The next town down: Isamoralda is fun too.
Pretty low key places but lots of decent diving and fishing.
I actually saw a marlin or sailfish while on the anchor line at one of the
wrecks.
