It's 3:30 in the f.cking morning and I'm wondering whether I still
need to bleed any air out the tanks I'm taking in for hydro.  This
insomnia thing is driving me crazy.

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend.
Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

Welcome.

If I pull off 6 hours in a row it is a miracle.

My diesel truck has been modified to run on an environmentally friendly
mixture of clean burning Caribou fat and whale oil.

I have and it doesnt help at all, in fact, makes it worse.

Now I know how my dad was able to get by on 4 or 5 hours a night, plus power
naps.

Besides, I'll sleep when I am dead.

I just remembered (I dont know how I forgot this, because I have been
suffering like you for like 3 years now, something to do with being 40-ish);

I used to work on the offshore rigs; 12 to 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for
2 weeks, then back home and two weeks off with a check for two 84 hour weeks
(the IRS used to just *pork* me).

Trying to sleep on the older platforms that utilized reciprocating engines
was very difficult. In spring you could hear the ice chunks hitting the legs
and downpipes, they wobbled a bit, and all the noises were transmitted
through, and resonated with, the entire structure. Stress factory Mal
Grande. Try to go to sleep knowing that the mechanics were aligning and
installing the pump you just repaired sucked hard, because you wanted to be
there for them to install it and light it off. Bitch at them when they put a
pipe wrench on the shaft of a 16,000 rpm centrifugal pump. Run through all
the bearing fits, clearances (Oh sh.t, I hope that race was in tight...) Now
do all this on machines that were worn out 20 years ago, absolutely *no*
expectation of needed tools without a week or ten days of lead time.
Improvise, adapt, overcome, make that greasy sh.t come out of the ground.

Coming home and trying to relax, not worry about breakdowns and where you
can hang a power nap (you'd be suprised how many places you can find to fall
asleep for a few minutes), was bad too. No noise, comfy bed, nothing to do
but all the sh.t you didnt do while you were offshore.

My brother is a nurse, and told me to try Melatonin.

It seemed to work very well, and wont get you in trouble for pee tests. Pop
a couple 45 minutes before you want to be to sleep, and bang. A good cup of
coffee clears it right off in the morning.

I am buying a bottle tonight on the way home.

Your quote should have been attributed to Groucho Marx (1890 - 1977)

During your insomnia bout, did you also wonder if there is a Dog?

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not
bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man
--Mark Twain

You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give
you a look that says, 'My God, you're right! I never would've
thought of that!'
--Dave Barry

One reason the dog has so many friends: He wags his tail instead
of his tongue.
--Source Unknown

"The average dog is a nicer person than the average person."
-- Andrew A. Rooney

"The more I know people, the more I like dogs"
-- can be attributed to MANY authors, possibly including myself. :-)

-- Bob.
