Once again a devious rec.scuban sabotaged my ostensible business trip.
Tomorrow I'm supposed to wake up at 6 a.m. but it's already after 2
a.m. here and my room service is still pending.
That's what I get for posting my location on rec.scuba. Thinking that
no rec.scubans lived anywhere near Chicago, I thought myself safe from
harm and frivilously declared my current situs to the world. However,
little did I realize that our very own D&C lives way too close to the
windy city and thought nothing of driving hours into the night across
state lines just for the evil purpose of keeping me up way too late.
Being my official NRA sponsor as well, D&C is simply truly evil.
But at least we had the pleasure of burning lots of rec.scubans' ears
as we talked about all of you, especially that big lug over in
Tennessee and that government guy down in Florida, both of whom we've
had the dubious pleasure of meeting on previous trips.
As D&C is one of the secret rec.scubans whose true identity is known
only to a privileged few, I was surprised by his appearance, looking
more like a young hippie type than the conservative old grunt I
expected. Naturally we fell into our usual scuba-related discussions
of politics and guns, in much more agreement in person than in our
rec.scuba alter-egos, and I have to admit that I had a great time even
though waking up early tomorrow morning is going to be a real bitch and
I'll be cursing him all throughout my shower.
Thanks again D&C for driving all the way out to see me and keeping me
company in my lonely windy city sojourn. And thanks again for your
delicious gift which I've again sampled tonight but am trying hard to
save a little to bring back home.
Next time I'll come out in the summer so we can dive in your frigid
lake without all the ice. Bring the guns too, as I was disappointed at
not making you the third rec.scuba whose guns I have furtively handled.
And remember: I am the NRA!

There's only one Rec.scuba.
God, I love this place.

It was fun. Traffic getting home was a bitch though. nearly 3 hours.

Yer welcome. Be careful, it's flammable.

So, where you live? Close enough to Cedar Rapids that we can break in
my new hangar fridge properly?

I live about 45 miles from Chicago, in Indiana. However, some genius
felt that it was ok to compress 6 lanes of traffic into ONE (that's 1,
singular, uno) lane of traffic on I-94. Backup was nearly 15 miles. Had
I known that they would do this, I would have taken an alternate route
home. It took nearly an hour and a half to go 4 miles. From there, it
took very little time to get home.
I am a bit far from Cedar Rapids....But if ya wanna come and get me(in
your plane), I'll gladly help you break in your Fridge.

But then I would have to fly you back and although I don't have a problem
with driving after drinking, I've avoided flying after drinking so far...
So, where's the closest place to you with good diving? Are you close to
Lake Michigan? Does it get warm enough for just a 5mm wetsuit in the
'summer'?

Depends on how deep you go. I do a lot of wrecks in 40-60 ft in a 2/3.
July and august into september is ok.
The closest place for "GOOD" diving is probably somewhere in the gulf.
"Acceptable" diving can be found in Lake Michigan.

Hell, I had ice on my truck this morning... It's kind of difficult to get
motived to even go to the crappy a.s little lake that they have to the NW of
town that some people go to just as an excuse to get wet... I saw some guys
diving it a couple of weekends ago, but they were diving dry...

Well, I guess "good" is a relative term around here... In the local New
Orleans area, "good" meant that you could see your gauges -- not that it
mattered since Lake Pontchartrain only averages 12 ft deep (once it gets
difficult to breathe, surface [or stand up])... In Houston, you had to get
around 8 miles from shore before the visibility was acceptable... Local
freshwater diving was comparable to Lake Pontchartrain, albeit with a
greater average depth... The visibility was better up at Canyon Lake in
Austin, but that wasn't all that close plus it had a significant thermoclime
even in the hottest days of summer... You ended up going into heatstroke
just getting into the water with a 3mm wetsuit, but you were cold at 50-60
ft... It was also pretty dark at depth also... The best diving in Houston
was catching a FunJet charter to Cozumel -- only a 2 hr flight...
Is Lake Michigan shore diving or boat charters? If charter, where do they
leave out of?

chicago, Portage (Indiana), Michigan City, Hammond. (that I dive with).
Mostly, however, I dive with friends.

Maybe now you realize, after living all the places you have lived, why dive
operators don't plan excursions to Iowa. With that said, there is an
abundance of good diving in the midwest.

There are two types of divers frequenting the lakes: drysuit divers and
divers wishing they owned drysuits.

Apparently L.A. has nothing on Indiana. That means you got home real late.
I told ya it was a comfortable couch.

I've already forgotten what you looked like so I couldn't even reveal it if
tortured. That stuff in the jar must have been some sort of brainwashing
fluid.

Fortunately TSA didn't catch what would have made a damn good molotov
cocktail. Dumb pilots breach their secured cockpit doors when they go to
take a leak. All ya got to do is light the jar and toss it in and I could
have taken out the Sears tower. They should make pilots wear Depends.
