Calif justices decline 'happy cow' lawsuit

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

(04-20) 18:39 PDT San Francisco (AP) --

The California Supreme Court is putting to pasture a lawsuit brought by an
animal rights group alleging the California Milk Producers Advisory Board is
falsely advertising that California's cows are happy.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sued here in December 2002
alleging the board's advertising was false and misleading. The ads show cows
grazing in green pastures with the slogan, "Great cheese comes from happy
cows. Happy cows come from California."

The animal rights group said it may never be known whether cows are happy,
but said cows live in deplorable conditions, are repeatedly milked and
impregnated before being slaughtered.

An appeals court in January ruled that Milk Producers Advisory Board, funded
by farmers, is immune from being sued under false-advertising laws, just
like other state agencies.

PETA says the ads falsely portray the lives of California cows. The group
asked the Supreme Court to review that decision, but the court declined
without comment Wednesday.

"False advertising is no less harmful when it comes from government-run
businesses," said Matthew Penzer, the attorney for PETA in the lawsuit.
"Painting a 'happy' image of an industry that sends 400,000 cows to
slaughter every year and their calves to the isolation of veal crates is
deceptive, no less so because it is the government doing the deceiving."

The case is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals v. California Milk
Producers Advisory Board, S131823.

So it would not be a false claim that the PETA- minded ilk would lead a
happy live in India ?

Hell, I'm impressed that a California court didn't agree with them.

Unfortunately PETA is right. You just have to drive by the smelly cow feed lot by
Highway 5 in California and have a look to know that the animals are mistreated. I
don't know if these cows are meat or dairy--the dairy cows may be better treated.
Still PETA fighting legally with farm industry is stacked against PETA though they
did recently win a lawsuit against Petco.

So you have personally interviewed the cows to determine their state of
happiness? I would think that as long they are kept in the dark as to
where they are going, and fed well, they are more than likely happy.
Cows are nearly as stupid as liberals. Your intimate knowledge of the
thinking process of a cow may well prove something different, however.

Did you know that cows can sort out more than 20 different weeds, and
use them accordingly to fight intestinal turbulences?
How does that compare with liberals?

I said "nearly as stupid" not "as stupid as" liberals

I know *lots* of conservative stoners (they just won't admit it
publically).

Of course not.

They rail against drugs and drug users publicly, then toke up privately.
Like Limbaugh calling for druggies to be sent up the river, meanwhile being
a junkie hopped up on illegally-obtained massive-strength opiates.  That's
part of the hypocrisy and self-loathing that characterizes conservatives,
allowing the fundamentalist Christians to do everything Jesus wouldn't do,
keeping brain-dead Terri Schiavo alive while lauding the killings of
thousands of innocents in Iraq, the Ann Coulters telling us that women
should never have been granted the vote because they're all dumb whores, and
the closeted gay married Republicans bashing homosexuals and gay marriage.

Ummm, I don't do either.  How many liberals do you know that can honestly
say the same?

No, no, we don't hate ourselves.  If we did, there wouldn't be so many of
us.  We're the ones with the guns.  It's liberals we don't much care for,
but we understand we aren't allowed to shoot them.  We're just not sure why.

This from sombody who not only isn't a Christian, but is half a part of the
group that killed Christ.

> . . . keeping brain-dead Terri Schiavo alive . . .

That clearly wasn't conservatives.  As far as I know, every conservative on
this group favored letting her go.  So did true Christians.  Let God's will
be done.

Thousands of innocents?  You counted?  You can tell innocent from not?

Glad I'm not a Rupublican.  I don't think I'd like to be gay.  On the other
hand, I don't think I've done a lot of gay bashing either.

Thanks. I was already starting to wonder. But what a fine difference
singular vs. plural makes.

I don't know of any liberals that can do that, once again showing that cows
are nearly (not quite) as stupid as liberals.  :-)

I believe that the liberals would be classified as the "intestinal
turbulences"...

I'm glad PETA spent their (your) money wisely to combat this.

I think you should donate a lot more.

Better PETA than the NRA.  They're wise to me now.  Their latest communique
came in a plain envelope with a sole return address of "CARDMEMBER
SERVICES".  In other words, the exact same packaging as a new or renewal
credit card, which I'd be sure to open.  Fortunately they still include the
handy-dandy postage-paid envelopes.

Although I sympathize with PETA I don't donate to them.  But I do support the non
militant Farm Sanctuary that lobbies for humane treatment of farm animals, as well as
several other mainstream animal welfare groups.

 Sweet Jesus.

Now they're putting farm animals on the dole.

Uh... this is a dive related website... right?  So, how are you going to
feel when PETA decides that SCUBA diving is an invasion on the happiness
and well-being of all those poor sea creatures?  It can't be long before
they try to ban diving... can it?  I suppose spearfishing  will be first,
and then all diving, boating and other water sports.  We'd better stop
commercial shipping and Naval activity, too.  Airplanes are bad for birds
and cars are definately not good for Opossums.  I suppose the best thing
for the animals would be for us to just shut down the modern world and sit
at home munching alfalfa.  Although, eating food that the animals could be
eating instead would be a cruelty beyond all reason, so I think we'd better
just plan on rolling up shop on the human race.  But then, who'd be left to
protect the animals from each other?  Oh god, I don't think I can take it!

Regards,
Jack
