It warms me to know that this subject is an important focus of your life.

Since you've heralded the harbinger, let me say:

I don't have to -try- and look tough,

I -am- part of the military crowd,

And I'm from East Tennessee, arguably an ignorant hick.

I wear a doorag from time to time to keep my scalp from getting sunburned.

But now that you've informed us that it's a diabolical plot, I'll taper
off.

 Welcome to Rec.scuba,

 You're not an ex-Marine.

It's easy to tell, along with the fact you're not too bright.

I'm not offended, it's beyond your limited reach.

And you can laugh all you want.

 But never to my face.

San Diego? You still ain't _really_ a Marine.

12th Marines? Oh jeeze, you ain't even an FO until you've shot out of

in 1975, a round from a 155 landed in the middle of Western Blvd.  Kinda

That happened just recently in Colorado or somewhere, an Avalanche Cannon.

Me personally, I gotta give them some kind of negative genius award for
missing the whole mountain.

Reminds me of a .30-06 Mauser bolt gun that Bill Davis showed me years
ago one time when I was visiting with him...sheared lugs and all.  The
son of an avid handloader apparently chose to make a really hot load
unsupervised, and fully fill the case with Red Dot before then
compressing the load to seat a bullet. Bill's estimate was that the
bolt let loose at somewhere above  250,000cup; it then passed clean
through his cheek and he actually survived his little mistake.

I have a buddy who has a Ruger Super Blackhawk with the top half of the
cylinder, and all of the backstrap gone, mounted to a nice plaque in his
living room.

250,000cup.

Wow.

I've torn the rails off an O-frame twice, but the lugs off a bolt...

Ouch.

I realize that "a miss is as good as a mile", but how much did they miss by? I know
the charge landed a lot farther away than it was supposed to, but did it clear the
ridgeline by a few feet or 100 yards?

To clear an avalanche path they may well have to put the charge in a spot that's very
close to the top, and it may well be that a short distance off to the side of the
intended spot the mountain has chosen to be a lot lower. Some minor variations on the
rounds and that pesky wind, and you have to expect the occasional boo-boo.

India Battery, 3/10 shot a HE round (fuse VT) with the wrong powder
charge and kilt a colonel's wife in 1982, forever naming that unit: "The
Killer Eye".

(Not the classic "short round", but in this case a long round. One two
many poweder charges)

Hmm, I don't know why, but for some reason, I'd always believed that Doug
was born above the Mason-Dixon line and just sort of adapted later, when his

It's even more complicated than that.

I was born west of the Mississippi River.

And my family has lived in East Tennessee since the early 1800s.

I can only guess that it also applies to plenty of divers I don't know, but I know
some divers with plenty of hair who wear do rags either specifically because of the
hair or because the mask strap bothers their ears. After the dive I expect some wear
them because they have our version of "helmet hair".

Two extra good points.  1) yes, now that you mention it, I did notice quite
an improvement on the mask strap ear thingy.  2) yes, now that you mention
it, my lovely flowing locks, aren't so lovely when I remove the banana . .
.but then again, the lovely flowing locks didn't look all that great after
dive even before the banana.

chilly wears a banana to keep her lovely flowing locks outta her face, when
she's diving.  And for added bonus points, it actually keeps me a bit
warmer.

I don't want to get off on a rant here, but what's with all the people
dogging scuba divers on newsgroups?  That is one of the dumbest things I
have ever seen, are they one of the, trying my hardest to look tough crowd
or the I'm too stupid to tie my shoelaces crowd.  well whatever, you got me,
sounds and looks lame come on people.  After all, we dont want to be
classifed as a bunch of ignorant hicks, who cant get over the newsgroups and
I mean the lame part of the newsgroups,  do we?
