I spent Saturday at the Shipwreck Festival in Welland Ontario put on by
the Niagara Falls Dive Association.  Weather was awful, but, it was
worth braving the snow storm to attend the annual event.  One of the
speakers was  James Delgado, the host of the National Geographic TV
series Sea Hunter.  During his talk about a Civil War  mini-sub he
found on a Panama  controlled island he mentioned the movie Sahara,
based on Clive Cussler's early Dirk Pitt novels.  Apparently the movie
has already been shown in some US cities (to bad reviews).  Anyone seen
it, and is there diving in it?

That mini sub was featured on a recent episode of "The Sea Hunters".
Interesting story, complete with New York, Fenian pirates, and the Pear
Islands...  As for the movie, I have not seen it, but if it's anything
like the book it'll be crap.

I loved the book, best Cussler ever. He vowed at one point to never allow
another movie to be made from his books. I guess this was the exception. If
I remember correctly there was very little if any diving in this book.

I saw it this weekend and Loved it. Of course I'm a huge Cussler and
Dirk Pitt fan. I would think anyone who SCUBA's would be. The big ending
from the book was changed for the movie. I haven't read it in years but
will probably read it again to compare.

He didn't want another movie because "Raise the Titanic" came out so
bad. But I'm hoping this makes enough money and we get a few more movies
with more of a diving theme. I also thought Matthew was a great choice
for Dirk.

Between Cussler and Grisham I don't know who writes the best beach/boat
book. But tell me, did the McConahey (sp?) embody the Dirk Pitt we have come
to know in the novels? Plus, if I had to conjure up what Giordano looked
like it wouldn't be the guy who portrays him in the film.

I haven't seen it yet but it sure seemed to me from the trailers that
neither actor was really suited to the characters we have come to
appreciate. I mean I know they probably couldn't have done the movie with
complete unknowns, but these two make me wonder if I can get thru the flick
without wondering aloud about the choices................on the other hand
if I don't get to stare at Paz Vega for 90 minutes, Penelope Cruz is a good
second choice :^)

I've actually began to believe that no actor could live up to the Dirk
Pitt we know, he's just to big. But McConahey comes about as close as
you can get.

Giordino is way off, but once I got past that fact I really enjoyed the
character in the movie.

Rudy Gunn is way off, but again I enjoyed the character in the movie.

The only one I really didn't like was Sandecker. As good an actor as
Macy is he just didn't come off as "crusty" enough for me. I guess I
just still picture him as the wimpy "Fargo" car salesman.

So overall the characters fall short of the book, but I still really
loved the movie, and I really enjoyed the characters in the movie. Now
admittedly I'm pretty easy to please, movie wise, but the action was
great, the comedy was well timed and funny and the story kept me interested.
