High Blood Pressure?
Asthma?
Sinus Infections?

The shop offering resort-based intro scuba dives says asthma, heart disease,
and sinus problems are conditions that they will use to say no to a
prospective customer.

Heart disease is a huge topic.  Do they mean coronary artery disease?  Do
they mean high blood pressure?  Do they mean high cholesterol?  Do they mean
cardiomyopathy?  Can someone with medicated and controlled high blood
pressure go scuba diving?

How about controlled asthma?

How about a sinus infection that clears up before taking the dive?

The shop has to say no to absolutely everything due to liablility.  You guys
have been there, done that, what do you know about this?

Meanwhile I'm off to find an MD who scuba dives.

Many people on blood pressure medication scuba dive. All the medical problems listed
above can be very mild or severe. It all depends.

Depending on the severity and other details, any one of these
may be a contraindication to SCUBA diving.  Before accepting a
student with any of these conditions, a dive shop or instructor
should require that the prospective student undergo a medical
exam and get a written O.K. from a doctor.

The fact that a MD SCUBA dives may not indicate that he/she is
qualified to answer medical questions related to diving.
As always, if there is any doubt contact DAN, or have the MD
contact them directly.  DAN can put you or your doctor in touch
with a doctor who IS qualified in dive medicine.

This is the correct answer. The shop/instructor will give you a medical
questionnaire, and based on your responses you may be asked to get a
doctor's sign off before being permitted to go into the pool. There is
a form for the doctor to fill out and sign. There is also a DAN form
available for the doctor, which has some information to help him with
an exam, plus contacts for him to call for further information.

AFAIK, this is SOP for every agency in the US.
