rnf2 - 13 Nov 2003 10:46 GMT What do you guys know about the A-L Conshelf Regs? I know the Supreme means it's a clod water model of the conshelf, but whats the conshelf itself like? The US navy uses them so they can't be that bad.... but then thinking about other military ballsups like the new army LAV-III brigades I start to wonder...

The Conshelf series of regulators has been around for a very long time. They are reliable and reasonably priced. I've got at least two, maybe three of them. All work fine in all conditions. On the other hand, Scuba Pro, Apex, Atomic and a lot of other high end, high performance regulators have kicked USD's butt in pretty much every test for the last 10 years or so.

Critical tests, in my opinion, are those that were done on machines, under controlled conditions, the kind of tests that do not guarantee what the user will like, but do tend to be objective.
I have several conshelf regulators, a Micra and my scuba pro. I also owned an Oceanic. The Scuba Pro regulator is the best of the bunch, but none except the Oceanic are poor. I gave that one away.

So it must have been Rodale's then.

:What did you replace it with? and do you like it better? I replaced the USD Conshelf Supreme, 1987 model with a Scubapro Mk20/G500 2001 model.
The only two differences I notice are: - the Scubapro packs better. - changing the mouthpiece on the Scubapro should be easier, but seems harder. I have never figured out how to work that mechanism. I am reluctant to use too much BFI because I don't want to break it.

Yup, the Scubapro stuff is coming highly recommended. I'll have to start shopping them around. Thanks Dan.

Brian Mitchell - 14 Nov 2003 19:58 GMT I used mine for over 20 years (serviced regularly) without problem. I think that I bought it used.
I recently switched to a Titan. I don't notice much of a difference.

LOL Wellll...lessee. I'm looking at one of my first regs. It's a Conshelf 20. On this set-up, it's my primary. The primary is the Conshelf and the octo is a Sherwood. God knows the model numbers. But, the entire unit...the section that I hooked to a tank... was/is a Conshelf. Number 4819340 I haven't used it for about 12 or 15 yrs but I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up and dive with it again today. I had no problem with it in the first place but my hub breathed off it and decided that he thought it breathed rough. He then removed it from my use and he bought me a new reg set-up from Mares to use.

Sounds like a lot of good reviews of the Conshelfs. The one I was going to get got sold while I was working out if it was a good brand to get, it went quick, yet more good reviews... lol
I know Sherwood and Mares Regs, but not much about the other brands. Sherwood is the brand that IIRC about 40% of divers and most independant shops use here in NZ, it's what the shop I learnt with used, very nice regs. Now I'm looking around for a reliable and cheap (in that order) reg to use as a first owned reg, I'm tired of hiring stuff.
Havn't used for 12 or 15 years? Hmm... feel like selling it?

And actually, I think I would like to hang onto it. I am sorry now that I got rid so many of my other dive things from that era. I practically gave them away at dive flea markets. I thought that no one would want my stuff that was 20 some yrs old but it seems that the vintage market is a bit valuable now. Changes.
~"Well now my mind is going thru those changes."~ +++ Can you name the singer of this tune ?? LOL Hint : I bought an album with this song on it when I was 17 yrs old. I'll be 47. The singer is a black artist. He is well known in jazz/blues circles from that era.
George - 17 Nov 2003 17:52 GMT Drummer Buddy Miles, "Dem Changes", third song on the Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies album. I just bought the CD of that a couple weeks ago. Good stuff. Actually, it's my favorite Hendrix album.
How are ya Barb? E-mail me, will ya?
Just back from Grand Cayman. Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, and so on.

I couldn't think of the guys name and I wrote "Miles Davis" down on the paper here. You're just a huge vault of information, George.

Ok... yes, I can think of 3 here too : The version that Miles did with Hendrix is the one that I meant initially. George guessed that version by the lyric line that I gave. The second one is the Buffet song that George alludes to in his post. The third song is actually one that I thought of after you posted this and it probably has to do with your name... David Bowie's version. Btw, speaking of Bowie, did you happen to catch his concert on TV the other night ?? He looks damn good for his age and all that he's done. Hardly any wrinkles... hmmm.
