If those in the know could enlighten me about commercial diving: In
researching job leads I have run across civil engineering firms that
perform waterfront work and they like to have their engineers conduct
"inspection work", requiring commercial diver capability. The
certification is preferred, but those with scuba experience may
undertake "additional training", I assume at one of a small group of
dive schools. These courses run for half a year and cost a king's
ransom. Is this the only option?

If you are a PE, there is OK money in this. you still need commercial
diver training, because the gear and procedures are way different. Talk
to these guys: http://www.internationaldivinginstitute.com
