I was curious.
Does anyone have any idea on scuba fatalities (or injuries) from several
decades ago versus now?

I would think there are more accidents now obviously because there are more
divers, but what about as a percentage of people diving?

Were there more accidents in the past becuase the equipment and general
knowledge (and training?) was not like it is now, or perhaps it's the
reverse. People who dove 40 years ago were mostly professionals as opposed
to most now being only occassional recreational divers.

I was just curious what the stats would show.

Quite a few folks have been keeping stats for a long time. The absolute
number of deaths has remained relatively steady as the number of divers
and dives has increased exponentially, i.e. the incidence has dropped
dramatically.

Those are the data. Fabricate yer own reasons why.

Darwin can only handle a certain number at a time...

Hmmm... Don't have any hard statistics, only anecdotal evidence...I never
had a diving accident an died from it back then and I've never done it now
either... Sample size of 1, not really statistically significant... <grin>

What's the margin of error, tho? It could be as high as 100%, in which case you
may be dead but just don't know it!
