Popeye's Keys Trip

Popeye - 19 Feb 2005 18:55 GMT Went south and went diving. Hit my old boat in West Palm, two great dives on the Breakers. Even with a new owner (that very day), my reputation apparently proceded me and they wouldn't take a dime. I tipped well and left corn liquor. Spent the night at Lee & Jayna's and drank things I can't pronounce, but will never forget. Delivered corn liquor. Left once again thinking that Lee is the luckiest guy in the world. Picked up some Ex-Marine buds at FFL and Miami, and hooked up with Tracey, my ex from Key Largo. Drank a record amount, and danced with every female I could pry off a barstool. Glad I wasn't around to witness it. Next day, went and saw Ric & Janet at Silent World, and fixed my buds up for a shakedown at Pennekamp State Park. Ric's service was top notch, as it has always been.

Ric ran a special off-schedule boat just for us, and his lovely wife Janet crewed. Met my Ohio divebud Rachel (Dig_it from Scubaboard) as well as Lee Bell, Rick Simms, and Curtis Baldwin. We had two great dives on the Speigel Grove, a dive I would recommend to everyone. A good time was had by all, and I can't recommend Silent World enough. Had a great time at dinner, and talked long afterwards. Met Raxafarian at dinner, a name some of you might recognize from Decostop. Handed out corn liquor. Went down and secured ourselves to the bar at Looe Key Dive Resort, which Rachel manages, and tried to tie the previous night's imbibment. I may have been successful, but the memory escapes me. Sunday, diving was called, unfortunately, and after delivering two gallons of corn liquor to Jim Wyatt, we went and did a 5 Star Duval Crawl, with Rachel riding herd. I remember hand feeding pelicans with somebody's filleted Barracuda, while hundreds took pictures. I then went walkabout, with the others trying to find me. Whenever my phone rang, I'd hand it to the nearest bartender and ask him/her to inform the search party of my location. Then I would haul a.s. They finally caught me at Irish Kevin's, wearing a new tank top, and not having a clue where the old one was. Then back to Coconuts at Looe Key, where we drank to the wee hours. Monday I dropped the guys back at their respective airports, and had dinner with ESG and the infamous Limey Dave (#76 Rec.scuban I've met) and his lovely new wife. It was a great dinner with Mike and Dave. I left the last of my corn liquor with Mike. That guy is so cool. A grand trip, hopefully repeated soon. On Tuesday, I came down with some form of the Andromeda Strain, and have been flat on my back ever since. Have no idea how I made it home alive, taking 41 hours for a 12 hour drive. Hope none of you other guys got it.
Thanks, everybody, for the hard work organizing and patience.
A great Rec.scuba dive, not my first, not my last.

Popeye - 20 Feb 2005 02:24 GMT > LOL great trip Popeye, was a bit reminiscent of Fear and Loathing in > Las Vegas. You have no idea. I remember parts of the trip in a blur, like Curtis's double Oreos and Lee and Jayna's bar, and having to translate labels of booze so we had a clue as to what we were drinking. Poor Rachel had to babysit 3 unusually large Ex-Marines intoxicated in Key West. Me and Limey Dave drinking a bar out of vodka, and Mike driving home. :-)
It couldn't have been a better time.

Then I would haul a.s. At least you were sporting enough to have a cellphone; Fox and Hound isn't much fun for the hounds without it. Which reminds me of a recent hunt for which I've been meaning to get this pic online, even though the punchline probably doesn't apply for Doug:

It was a great > > So Dave didn't get cold feet? > > Congratulations Limey Dave! If you mean about diving, I'm afraid he did. Actually, he was recovering from whatever the latest nasty disease in the area was. If you mean about medicating himself with copious quantities of alcohol, he did not. The party was till going strong when I called to see if they had chained Popeye to the bar or if he was returning to Casa de Bell to sleep it off.
Otherwise, Dave has no reason to have cold feet. Despite his country of origin, he's a conservative, right thinking, gun loving southern adoptee.

> Uh, the wedding? Ahhh, the wedding. I'm proud to report that Limey Dave did, indeed, get married. He, apparently, voluntarily joined the ranks of the oppressed, the ruled, the slaves of they who must be obeyed. So far, so good. Kick and scream as he may, he's well on the way to total submission. OK, so he's not exactly well on his way, but he is headed in that direction.

Your call is one of the last things I recall clearly, that must have been *before* my fifth pint of vodka!
