Dive safely, Captain Dale

Lee Bell - 11 Feb 2005 07:02 GMT > He tolerates cold well, 80 degree is cold? Something wrong with this > picture. Trust me, everything is right about that picture. There's something wrong with a picture of people dressed up in rubber suits. How can you call it getting wet, when you're diving dry?
OK, so the water's closer to 70, alright?

ajtessier - 13 Feb 2005 02:59 GMT Who said any thing about diving dry? OK, I did just buy a dry suit but just so I can get more dives in. I have been divining wet since I got certified ( 8/99), last year the only two months I didn't get wet were February and March. So far (463 dives) most of my dives have been in Maine and New Hampshire, I did log five dives in Canada and I went South for one dive to Rhode Island. BTW, my warmest dives where the ones in Canada 75 F.

Two dives, about 100 minutes total, 133 feet maximum, water temperature 73 F minimum. Air temperature, cold enough to make me shiver after each dive. Next time I'll take better surface thermal protection.

Steve - 14 Feb 2005 18:20 GMT >Air temperature, cold > enough to make me shiver after each dive. Next time I'll take better > surface thermal protection. Even on trips to the tropics the minimum I pack is a fleece pullover and a goretex windshell. I figure I lose enough heat while diving that it's going to be hard to get *too* warm for the first couple of hours after the dive and I'll often wear the fleece even though I don't actually feel cold. Putting on something warm before I actually feel cold isn't any different than drinking before I actually feel thirsty. If I was at all cool during the dive (which has happened on exactly 100% of my dives) I figure my body temp is down a bit even though I may feel comfortable once I'm dry.

Not bad advice when there's enough space to accomodate everybody. That wasn't the case this time. It was a day boat, lacking in excess space suitable for things that need to stay dry.

Get yourself one of those warm coverup thingies from Lynn - she lent us a couple on one of our trips last year, and they were great.

I love it when great minds work along the same lines. Rick Simms stayed with me over the weekend and he had one. If it had not been for all the people coming and going over the weekend, I would have driven up to Boynton to get one from Lynn.

Waiting for one of y'all to give up a good trip report.
All I can say to describe it was very well worth it to get a little salty for a change, and the company was awesome.

But I'm hoping to some of the Thursday thru Tuesday runs down for some diving during the summer.

Last dive : Sunday Feb 13th. 52 minutes. Dive boat cancelled because of 2 meter waves right into port, so we did a shore dive. 2 degrees surface, huge "film" of a thermocline at 22 meters, 9 degrees below. Acceptable visibility; but some sand churned up by the waves.
Dove on 35% nitrox to have a max time below the 22 meter mark. Max depth 27.7 meters. Pretty square profile of the dive.

All the www's will be screwed for diving when the ice age comes. With the over-regulation we have there won't be any place left to dive that won't require a cavern, cave or ice cert . At least the dive sites won't be crowded.
And besides, the www's won't be able to handle the extra gear needed for cold water. They'll all be fussing about hoodhair and such.
