So go here for starters: google, search . . . enter: scuba diving . . .you are gonna be amazed!
Best of luck with your article.

mike gray - 05 Feb 2005 16:29 GMT > hello, > [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > > tnx What you will find on the web is grossly inaccurate, mostly repostings of a single "history" time line that popped up about ten years ago.
The only web source that is well researched and reliable is: http://www.hds.org/
Or, you can wait for my book, "The First Two Hundred Years of SCUBA, 1770 - 1970", coming out in time for Christmas (yeah, I said that two years ago, but I really mean it this time. If the Brooklyn Historical Society ever gets its newspaper collection out of storage).

My goal is some breakthrough stuff on Charles Condert of Brooklyn, NY, the world's first (documented) successful scuba diver. I've got some good stuff debunking the Klingert claims, but the Brooklyn Historical society has the only collection of newspapers of the time, and they are in a vault waiting completion of renovation of the BHS HQ.
You'll get another draft before I send it to the printer. And come hell or high water, It will go out as Christmas gifts this year!

I have a reliable description of his gear and dives from shortly after his death, from an eye witness. There is, as far as I have so far found, no contemporary descriptions. I've made three trips to Brooklyn, so far, that have been fruitless. I'm currently planning a fourth.
He's not a figment of my imagination, but he's damnably obscure. And I ain't gonna give up on ol' Charley-boy. He da man!

cafepress might be of interest to you regarding the book. check http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/
they will take your booklet in pdf form, and print and bind it on demand when someone wants it. they do billing / credit cards, and shipping. it will cost you almost nothing up front.
you can get 'at cost' copies.
> m mike gray - 06 Feb 2005 15:28 GMT > cafepress might be of interest to you regarding the book. > check [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > you can get 'at cost' copies. Cafe is one of the vanity publishers I looked at. Right now there's a few a bit higher on my list.
My plan is to do a couple hundred, give away half and sell the rest for enough to cover the printing. I'm vain enough to figure a few people would like to read it, not vain enough to think that I need a publicist and distributor. It's a hobby, not a business venture.

BTW, it's a refreshing break from the monotonous personal and political wars we usually get.
I haven't heard of him before, but searches turned up a lot of info, including your contribution on http://www.divingheritage.com/waybackkern.htm. Seems he was also the first SCUBA death.
How was the vis in the East River in 1832?

Please keep us informed. I want to throw in a plug for Mike here. I've been one of the fortunate ones to get a sneak preview and from what I saw, Mike's put a helluva lot of research into this, and has done his work from the perspective of one who has actually used some of the gear, although I doubt even ESG was diving pre-1900. I read it all in one sitting and enjoyed it immensely.
I liked what I saw well enough that I plan to buy a copy for my own modest dive library. I suspect there are a lot of you like me out there who are almost as interested in the gear as in the diving. It just wouldn't be as much fun if I couldn't fiddle and make my own bits and pieces, or tear apart the ones I can't make to at least understand what makes them tick. If you saw Mike's garage you'd understand what I mean.

Sounds like a good enough excuse to have a get-together (for lunch or something...current surface water temp's below 40F) if you're going to be coming north to view them. Some of us locals (or semi-locals) can be runners for you once they reopen the doors, too.
