Ziggy - 11 Jan 2005 20:56 GMT Hi, We are going to Cozumel island for next week. Looking for budget accomodation over there.

swashbuckler - 11 Jan 2005 21:18 GMT > Hi, > We are going to Cozumel island for next week. Looking for budget > accomodation over there. > > Ziggy Depends on what you mean by "budget". Perhaps you could include some information about the number in your party, their ages, what you're looking for (hotel or house), and if a beach location, pool, etc, are important to you.

> We are going to Cozumel island for next week. Looking for budget > accomodation over there. "Budget" is a rather subjective measurement... I've stayed in the Day's Inn there and I found it quite comfortable and diver friendly (i..e. it was a walk-in multi-person size shower with an additional faucet that made for easy rinsing of dive gear)... I've also stayed at the Allegro -- it's definitely NOT a "budget" accomodation by any stretch of the imagination... I'm not much of one for the all inclusive places, so I actually preferred the Day's Inn... At that time, Day's Inn was around $50 per night... There were some cheaper places for maybe $25 per night from what I understand, but I'm not sure how acceptable they might have been...
Dillon Pyron - 12 Jan 2005 00:21 GMT >Hi, >We are going to Cozumel island for next week. Looking for budget >accomodation over there. > >Ziggy As others have said, define "budget".
That said, try Hotel Meson de San Miguel. Right on the plaza.

Reef Fish - 12 Jan 2005 11:35 GMT > >Hi, > >We are going to Cozumel island for next week. Looking for budget [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > > As others have said, define "budget". "cheap", "economy", "frugal". :-)
> That said, try Hotel Meson de San Miguel. Right on the plaza. The only thing going for it is that it's on the Square -- otherwise, it's neither "cheap" (relative to Cozumel "cheap") nor desirable, IMO.
I stayed there once, in a promotion, when the room was $10 a night. :-) Never been back ever since.
There are MANY better stays in Coz for $25 or less per night. (I think Hotel Meson is more than $40 a night); and there are many $10 or $5 a night hotels not far from the Square -- no extra charge for Mexican fleas.
The names of some of these are in the archives of what I had posted over the years about Cozumel.
Go to the advanced search option of groups.google.com.
Put in "Cozumel hotel" as the keywords, and "reef fish" as the author for the search, you'll find 138 threads (that's far too many!)
Now add the condition "budget economy cheap" in the condition 'must contain one of these words', and you'll reduce the hits to 23 -- and even though many of the posts are DATED (i.e., oldies, in the 1990s), most of the hotels stayed pretty much the same.
Here's ONE way to find "cheap" and reasonably clean and stayable hotels in Coz:
Start from the Square, and start walking South on Avenida 5th (the first street from the ocean), and you'll find many economy but reasonable hotels such as Hotel Elizabeth, Hotel Suites Colonial, Hotel Aquilar, etc., etc. (by the time you get to Calle 3 Sur (third street). The Suites Bahia hotel is by far the best buck for the bang. I stay there every time I go to Cozumel, since 1995.
In the archived threads, I've considered it in the "budget" category. Wouldn't trade the Large Penthouse Suite of that hotel (which is STILL cheap <G>) for any hotel room or suite on the island for the same price. :-)
The Management has taken that room off the LIST (in the lobby and possibly elsewhere) probably because of high demand because I have written so much about staying in that room (with separate living/ dining room overlooking the dive-boat pier, fridge, cooking facilities, color TV, and ... a HUGE jaccuzzi in the bathroom <G> -- Bob.

Grumman-581 - 13 Jan 2005 22:21 GMT > > $35 per night. > > But how can that be? Reef is an authority on everything. I guess they must have just recently started charging for the fleas... Still, $35 just for the fleas seems rather excessive... Oh well, I guess if you just *must* have the 'atmosphere', you would be willing to pay an additional $35...
I still want to drive down there one of these days... Unfortunately, I'm getting further away from it than closer to it, so something isn't working quite right... I must be slowing migrating towards Florida so that when I'm ready to retire, I'll just have to step across the border...

It just seems that all the retirees end up in Florida... I figure that I'll just keep finding jobs closer and closer to Florida so that when I finally retire, I'll be there... <grin
Greg Mossman - 14 Jan 2005 22:14 GMT > Hmmm... As a pilot, perhaps I know something about commercial aviation > that > you don't? <evil-grin> Apparently you do. From my non-pilot point of view, air travel is statisically much safer than driving (and that's just driving in the USA -- it's got to be much, much, much safer than driving in Mexico).
You may not fear going up a 100 feet or so in a puddlejumper but you obviously fear real flying: in a huge jet going 500 mph at 35,000 feet. Here's a tip: avoid the American airlines which rip you off $4 or so for a beer and cut you off after two. Mexican airlines give you beer for free, all you can drink.
Unfortunately it looks like no Mexican airlines service New Orleans, just a Salvadorean one. Go figure.

Your money goes a lot further there. We're talking San Miguel Allende. Maybe go for a visit in a year or so and take a suitcase of money. Buy a little townhouse or something as an investment, rent it out now, eventually live in it.
The local economy is almost all dollar based (hmm, sounds like the other San Miguel) and almost everybody speaks English (ditto). But the diving sucks.

Grumman-581 - 15 Jan 2005 06:47 GMT > You may not fear going up a 100 feet or so in a puddlejumper Actually, I've had my plane up to 14,700 ft... BTW, flying at 100 ft is a lot more stressful than 10,000 ft due to the habit of those cell phone and radio towers to just jump out and try to grab you...
> but you obviously fear real flying: in a huge jet > going 500 mph at 35,000 feet. If my plane would go that fast or that high, I would... It won't, but I also get 2-digit gas mileage from my plane... Not something that is going to happen once you start talking about jets...
I just find commercial aviation to be a hassle that is seldom worth it... Grace informed me that Kaitlyn is going to be out of school for Mardi Gras vacation in February and it would be nice if we could go skiing at that time... All the flights from here to Denver or Salt Lake City tend to go via some other hub (Atlanta or Cincinatti) and result in around an 8 hour trip... Hell, I can fly my plane from here to Denver (924 nm) in less than 9 hours and probably land closer to our intended destination... On top of that, I save 2 hours getting to the airport to check-in and another hour getting our bags once we get to the destination... Door to door times make my little 120 kt "puddlejumper" faster than a fuckin' 737... SLC is around 1245 nm, so the 737 would be able to catch up with me... If I didn't mind flying in the mountains at night in a plane whose service ceiling is less than the top of some of the mountains, I could land a lot closer to the ski area and instead of a 2 hour drive from Denver to the ski area hotel, it might just be a 15 minute drive... If I was flying solo, I would probably risk it, but Grace would never let me live it down if I killed all of us in the process...
Of course, there is also the advantage of not having to check any luggage and no one complaining that I have a handgun in the cockpit...
> Here's a tip: avoid the American airlines which rip > you off $4 or so for a beer and cut you off after two. Back before 9/11, I would sometimes have a small cooler with me on the flight... Enough for six drinks... I usually carried soft drinks in it, but sometimes I had a couple of beers in there... No one ever said anything about it and I usually drank from them instead of the airline supplied drinks (they didn't have the soft drink that I preferred)...
> Unfortunately it looks like no Mexican airlines service New > Orleans, just a Salvadorean one. Go figure. Since I'm northeast of New Orleans, I have the option of flying out of Gulfport, MS (GPT) or New Orleans (MSY). GPT is not that much further and doesn't require me to cross all of New Orleans around rush hour...
>From my house to the French Quarter is about 40 miles... From here to MSY is slightly over 48 miles... From here to GPT is 52.7 miles, but there is minimal traffic since it does not consist of driving through New Orleans...
> Why not retire in Mexico? Your money goes a lot > further there. First of all, I don't like their gun laws... Seems kind of stupid to only let the rebels to have guns... On top of that, I like the conveniences of modern civilization just a little bit... Kind of nice to have water coming out of the tap that is drinkable... My current house has an 1100 ft water well... Acceptable tasting water, especially after you run it through a filter to get the slight hydrogen sulfide smell out of it...

That is the STANDARD room rate. Definitely "more than $40 a night". -- Bob.

:^) You'd know all about officious.

Froggy - 14 Jan 2005 13:17 GMT www.dictionary.com is your friend ;-)
officious \uh-FISH-uhs\, adjective: Marked by excessive eagerness in offering services or advice where they are neither requested nor needed; meddlesome.

See also dictionary for "under-educated" and "under-informed". :-)

>From the Front Desk of Hotel Meson San Miguel, Cozumel: $68 USD Single or Double
No longer in the "cheap" accommodation class.
The rate may change from time to time. But during February or March 2005, the rate is most likely to be $50 Single or Double.
Ob scuba: Due to El Norte, the Cozumel port was closed to diving on Saturday and Monday. It was open again today, in good weather, after some showers in the morning. The wind was still fairly strong, but the water was relatively calm on West Side, after passing the Puerta Maya cruiseship Pier and the Calete.
The cruiseships must have brought enough passengers to have the entire water-front between about Puerta Lagosta and the Square completely replaced by fancy BRICK road (instead of asphalt).

chilly - 14 Jan 2005 16:31 GMT > > :^) > > > > You'd know all about officious. > > > I don't know in what officious is being used - someone please > enlightened me. From the web: Here's one: officious
adjective DISAPPROVING
too eager to tell people what to do and having too high an opinion of your own importance:
- He's an officious little man and widely disliked in the company.
Here's another:
Adjective: officious u'fishus Intrusive in a meddling or offensive manner
Here's a third:
"bustling about self-importantly making an officious nuisance of himself"
Or how about from hard copy of the Oxford Dictionary of current English: 1. domineering 2 intrusive in correcting etc.
Or how about from my desk: An obnoxious little pain in the a.s with an undeserved superiority complex that may arise from his small-man complex
Grumman-581 - 14 Jan 2005 17:13 GMT > An obnoxious little pain in the a.s with an > undeserved superiority complex that may > arise from his small-man complex Still got sex on the mind, I see... <snicker
Reef Fish - 14 Jan 2005 03:08 GMT > >> As others have said, define "budget". > > [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > > $35 per night. I haven't stayed there for YEARS, which was why I said "I think ... is more than $40 a night"
I found this post via google, of a review posted in 1995 (that is 10 years ago <G>):
$> The one we usually stay in is called the Meson San Miguel, it's $> right on the north side of the plaza, it costs $35/night. No TV
I looked up the hotel webpage link
https://www.reservetravel.com/v4/guestinformation.aspx
and it gave, for a week (8 nights) in March:
$> Room 1 $> Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun Mon Total $> $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $352.00 (per room) $> $44.00
$> Total Room Cost: $403.04 (includes tax recovery charges and fees) $> *Unless specified otherwise, rates are quoted in US Dollars.
So, that's $50+ USD a night.
RF> (I think Hotel Meson is more than $40 a night); is not too far off.
